  • Facilitate discussion on possible solutions for common barriers

Step 3

Set Personal Punctuality Goals

7 minutes

  • Invite each student to choose a specific, measurable goal (e.g., arrive 2 minutes before bell)

  • Have students write their goal on the first page of their [Punctuality Logbook]

Step 4

Log Instructions & Week Commitment

5 minutes

  • Read key sections of the [Log Instructions Script] aloud, highlighting how to record arrival times and reflections
  • Walk through a sample entry on the projector
  • Emphasize daily commitment for one week

Step 5

Closure & First Entry

5 minutes

Timing Is Everything

Welcome to our lesson on punctuality!

Being on time helps us:
• Learn without missing important info
• Show respect for others’ time
• Feel less rushed and more in control.

Welcome students! Today we’re starting our journey to becoming timing champions. Explain that being on time helps everyone learn and keeps our day running smoothly.

What Is Punctuality?

Punctuality means arriving or starting exactly at the planned time.

Why does punctuality matter?
• You won’t miss important activities
• You build trust and responsibility
• You reduce stress from rushing

Ask students: “What does punctuality mean?” Capture a few answers before showing the formal definition.

Barriers to Being On Time

Think of reasons we might be late:
• ____________________
• ____________________
• ____________________

We’ll find solutions next!

Invite students to shout out reasons they might be late. Write their ideas on the board as you project this slide.

Personal Goal Examples

• I will arrive 2 minutes before the bell rings.
• I will pack my backpack the night before school.
• I will set my alarm clock 15 minutes earlier.

Explain each example and highlight how they’re specific and measurable.

Sample Log Entry

Date: //____
Arrival Time: ____ AM/PM
On Time? (Yes/No)
Reflection: What helped or got in my way today?
Action for tomorrow: ____________________

Show students how to complete each field. Emphasize the reflection—why they were or weren’t on time and what to improve.

Script

Log Instructions Script

Teacher: "Okay everyone, now that you have your Punctuality Logbook in front of you, let me show you exactly how to use it. We’re going to walk through each part together so you feel confident filling it out every day."

1. Recording the Date and Arrival Time

Teacher: "At the top of each page you’ll see Date. Write today’s date in the first blank. Next, look for Arrival Time. When you walk into class each morning, check your watch or clock and write down the exact time you arrived—like 7:58 AM or 8:03 AM."
Pause and point to each field on the projected sample.

2. On Time? Yes or No

Teacher: "Under On Time?, circle Yes if you arrived at or before your personal goal time. Circle No if you arrived after your goal. Remember, the goal you set tells you exactly when you aim to be here."
Wait a moment for students to nod or ask questions.

3. Reflection: What Helped or Got in My Way

Teacher: "Here comes the most important part—the Reflection. I want you to think: What helped you arrive on time today? Or, if you were late, what got in your way? Write one or two sentences to explain. For example, ‘I set my alarm earlier’ or ‘I forgot my backpack and had to go back home.’"
Give students 30 seconds of thinking time.

4. Action for Tomorrow

Teacher: "Finally, under Action for Tomorrow, decide on one thing you’ll do differently to reach your goal time. Maybe you’ll lay out clothes the night before or set a second alarm. Write that action down as a promise to yourself."

Sample Entry Walk-Through

Teacher: "Let’s do a quick sample together on the board.
• Date: 09/15/2023
• Arrival Time: 8:02 AM
• On Time? No (since my goal was 8:00)
• Reflection: I hit snooze too many times this morning.
• Action for Tomorrow: I will put my alarm clock across the room so I have to get up to turn it off."

Daily Commitment

Teacher: "Each morning this week, repeat these steps in your own logbook. By the end of the week, we’ll look for patterns and celebrate improvements. Ready to give it a try? Let’s fill out today’s entry now!"
