Prep

Preparation Steps

15 minutes

Step 1

Introduction: Meet Superflex!

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students what a superhero does. Introduce the concept of our inner thoughts as a 'superpower' or a 'villain.'
    * Explain that today we'll meet Superflex, a superhero who helps us with our self-talk.
    * Use Superflex Self-Talk Squad Slides (Slide 1-2) to set the stage.

Step 2

What is Self-Talk?

10 minutes

  • Lead a discussion on what 'self-talk' means. Provide examples of both helpful and unhelpful self-talk.
    * Ask students to share (voluntarily) examples of things they might say to themselves.
    * Introduce the idea of "Thought Bubbles" (unhelpful thoughts) and "Superflex Sayings" (positive affirmations) using Superflex Self-Talk Squad Slides (Slide 3-5).

Step 3

Self-Talk Superpowers Game

15 minutes

  • Explain the rules for the Self-Talk Superpowers Game.
    * Divide students into small groups or pairs.
    * Have students play the game, practicing identifying unhelpful thoughts and transforming them into positive statements.
    * Circulate to provide support and encourage participation.

Step 4

Journaling Reflection

10 minutes

  • Hand out the My Positive Self-Talk Journal.
    * Guide students through the first prompt, encouraging them to reflect on their own self-talk.
    * Emphasize that this journal is a personal tool to help them practice Superflex skills.

Step 5

Wrap-Up: Becoming a Superflex Hero

5 minutes

  • Bring the class back together.
    * Review the main takeaways: We all have self-talk, and we can choose to make it helpful.
    * Encourage students to practice their positive self-talk skills outside of class.
    * Use Superflex Self-Talk Squad Slides (Slide 6) for a concluding thought.

Superflex Self-Talk Squad!

Unleash Your Inner Superhero!

Welcome students and introduce the exciting topic of becoming a Superflex hero! Ask them what makes a superhero powerful.

Meet Superflex!

Superflex is here to help us train our brains to be super strong!

Introduce Superflex as the superhero of our minds. Explain that just like superheroes fight villains, we can fight unhelpful thoughts.

What is Self-Talk?

It's the voice inside your head!

Sometimes it's helpful... sometimes it's not!

Explain that self-talk is what we say to ourselves in our heads. It can be positive or negative. Ask for examples of what they might say to themselves.

Uh Oh! Unhelpful Thoughts (Thought Bubbles)

These are the thoughts that try to trick us and make us feel down or give up.

  • "I'm not good enough."
  • "This is too hard."
  • "I'll never learn this."

Introduce "Thought Bubbles" as symbols for unhelpful or negative thoughts. Give a few simple examples (e.g., "I can't do this," "This is too hard").

Transform with Superflex Sayings!

These are your superhero words that give you power and confidence!

  • "I can try my best!"
  • "I can ask for help!"
  • "I will keep practicing!"

Introduce "Superflex Sayings" as powerful, positive affirmations. Emphasize that we can change unhelpful thoughts into helpful ones. Provide examples.

You're a Superflex Self-Talk Hero!

You have the power to change your thoughts!

Choose positive self-talk and unleash your inner superhero!

Conclude by reminding students that they have the power to choose their thoughts. Encourage them to be their own Superflex heroes.

Game

Self-Talk Superpowers Game

Become a Superflex Self-Talk Hero by transforming unhelpful thoughts into powerful Superflex Sayings!

Materials Needed

  • Thought Bubble Cards: (Print and cut out the unhelpful thoughts below or write your own on index cards)
  • Superflex Saying Cards: (Students can generate these or you can provide examples on index cards)

How to Play

  1. Prepare the Cards: Shuffle the Thought Bubble Cards and place them face down in a pile.
  2. Draw a Thought Bubble: The first player draws a Thought Bubble Card.
  3. Identify the Unhelpful Thought: Read the unhelpful thought aloud. For example: "I can't do this math problem, it's too hard!"
  4. Transform with a Superflex Saying: The player then thinks of a positive Superflex Saying that can challenge that unhelpful thought. For example: "I will try my best and ask for help if I get stuck!"
  5. Share and Discuss: The player shares their Superflex Saying with their group or partner. The group can discuss if it's a helpful and powerful affirmation.
  6. Next Player: The next player takes a turn. Continue playing until all cards are used or time runs out.
