Speak Up, Stand Up!

Self Advocacy

This lesson introduces 1st-grade students to the concept of self-advocacy through a discussion and a fun, interactive drawing activity. Students will learn how to express their needs and feelings in a positive way. Step 1

  • Use the Discussion Questions to guide a conversation about self-advocacy.
  • Encourage students to share their thoughts and experiences.
  • Highlight the importance of using kind words and being respectful when advocating for themselves.

Activity: Drawing Advocacy Situations

10 mins

  • Explain the activity: students will pick a card from the Printable Cards for Drawing Activity and draw how they would handle the scenario.
  • Encourage students to think about what they would say and how they would express their feelings.
  • After drawing, students can share their drawings with the class and discuss different approaches.
