Lesson Plan

Session 1 Lesson Plan

Kayliah will learn to recognize emotions and match them with self-regulation strategies, correctly identifying strategies for 3 out of 3 classroom scenarios during this session.

Building an initial understanding of emotions and coping strategies helps Kayliah manage strong feelings, reduces outbursts, and sets the foundation for independent self-regulation.

Audience

Session 1: Recognizing Emotions

• Notice our own feelings
• Practice ways to calm down

Let’s begin!

Greet Kayliah warmly. Say: “Today we’ll notice our feelings and practice ways to calm down.” Briefly explain that by the end of our time she’ll be able to name emotions and pick a calm-down strategy.

Introducing Emotion Flashcards

Show each emotion flashcard one at a time. Name the emotion clearly (happy, sad, angry, frustrated). Ask Kayliah to point or gesture to match. Praise every correct identification.

Self-Regulation Strategies

• Take 3 deep breaths
• Count to five
• Ask for a break

Display the self-regulation strategy poster. Describe each strategy using simple words and gestures. Model deep breaths aloud: “I feel upset, I take three big breaths.” Invite Kayliah to try it with you.

Guided Scenario Practice

  1. Draw a Scenario Card
  2. Ask: How do you feel?
  3. Ask: Which strategy helps?

Tell Kayliah you’ll draw a scenario card. Read it aloud slowly. Ask: “How might you feel?” Point to emotion flashcards. Then ask: “Which strategy could help?” Point to the poster. Offer two choices if she needs help.

Reinforce & Close

• Place tokens for correct answers
• Provide praise
• See you next time!

Celebrate each correct response by placing a token on the reward chart. Give verbal praise: “Great job choosing deep breaths!” Remind Kayliah she’ll practice again next time.
