Safety Superheroes Unite!

Students will be able to identify at least three important safety rules and name a trusted adult they can go to for help, understanding how to act safely in different environments.

Learning safety rules empowers students to protect themselves and others, fostering a sense of security and responsibility. These foundational skills are crucial for their well-being at school, home, and in the community.

  • Safety Superheroes Slide Deck, - Chart paper or whiteboard, - Markers, - Safety Scenario Cards, - My Safety Circle Worksheet, and - Safety Superheroes Cool-Down

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review the Safety Superheroes Slide Deck and familiarize yourself with the content.
    - Print and cut out the Safety Scenario Cards.
    - Print copies of the My Safety Circle Worksheet for each student.
    - Prepare chart paper or a whiteboard for brainstorming.
    - Review the Safety Superheroes Cool-Down.

Step 1

Warm-Up: What Keeps Us Safe?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students: "What are some things that keep us safe?" Allow students to share their initial thoughts.
    - Introduce the idea that safety is about knowing what to do and who to trust to stay healthy and happy.

Step 2

Introduction: Safety Superheroes!

5 minutes

  • Present the Safety Superheroes Slide Deck, starting with the title slide.
    - Explain that today, they will become 'Safety Superheroes' by learning important safety rules.
    - Discuss the concept of a 'trusted adult' using the slides. Ask students to think of examples (parents, teachers, police officers, firefighters).

Step 3

Safety Rules Discussion

10 minutes

  • Go through the safety rules presented in the Safety Superheroes Slide Deck (e.g., 'Stop, Look, and Listen,' 'Ask Before You Go,' 'Know Your Name and Number').
    - For each rule, discuss why it's important and provide simple, relatable examples.
    - Encourage students to share how these rules apply to their lives.

Step 4

Activity: Safety Scenario Cards

5 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups or work as a whole class.
    - Distribute Safety Scenario Cards to each group or read them aloud.
    - Have students discuss or shout out what a Safety Superhero would do in each situation.
    - Facilitate a brief discussion after each scenario, reinforcing the correct safety action.

Wrap-Up: My Safety Circle

5 minutes

  • Distribute the My Safety Circle Worksheet.
    - Instruct students to draw or write the names of trusted adults in their lives.
    - Conclude with the Safety Superheroes Cool-Down, having students share one new safety tip they learned.

What is Safety?

Keeping ourselves and others safe and healthy!

Why is safety important?

Engage students by asking what safety means to them. Explain that safety is about keeping ourselves and others from harm.

They are here to help you!

Introduce the concept of a trusted adult. Emphasize that these are people who care for them and can help in any situation. Show a short, age-appropriate video about trusted adults.

Safety Rule #1: Stop, Look, and Listen!

  • Stop: What are you doing?
  • Look: What is happening around you?
  • Listen: What do you hear?

Think about crossing the street or hearing a fire alarm!

Introduce the first key safety rule. Discuss what 'Stop, Look, and Listen' means in different contexts like crossing the street or hearing an alarm.

Safety Rule #2: Ask Before You Go!

Always ask a trusted adult before you:

  • Go with someone new.
  • Go to a new place.
  • Change your plans.

Why is this rule important?

Explain why it's important to ask before going anywhere, especially with someone new or to a new place.

Safety Rule #3: Know Your Name and Number!

It's important to know:

  • Your full name
  • Your phone number (if you know it)
  • Your address (if you know it)

This helps grown-ups find you or help you!

Discuss the importance of knowing personal information in case of an emergency.

Safety Scenario Cards Activity

What would a Safety Superhero do?

We will read different situations. Think about our safety rules and trusted adults to decide the safest thing to do!

Introduce the activity. Explain that they will be given scenarios and need to decide what a 'Safety Superhero' would do.

Be A Safety Superhero Every Day!

You are all Safety Superheroes!

  • Remember your safety rules.
  • Talk to your trusted adults.
  • Keep yourself and others safe!

Wrap up the lesson by reiterating the main safety message and encouraging them to be Safety Superheroes every day.
