Success Strategies Discussion
Purpose
This guided conversation helps participants deepen their understanding of the habits and supports that fueled their recovery milestones. Through sharing and listening, members reinforce positive strategies, learn new approaches from peers, and strengthen the group’s collective wisdom.
Group Guidelines
- Confidentiality: What’s shared here stays here.
- Respect: Listen without judgment and value each person’s experience.
- Active Listening: Use eye contact or nodding; hold space for others to finish.

Materials Needed: Flip chart or whiteboard, markers
Next Step: Use insights from this discussion to complete the “Setting Intentions” section on the Recovery Reflection Worksheet.
Activity
Success Timeline Activity
Purpose
Help participants visualize their recovery journey by mapping key successes and supports over time, reinforcing growth and peer encouragement.
Materials Needed
- Sticky Notes in at least 3 different colors
- Pens or Markers
- Large wall space, whiteboard, or flip chart
- Tape or magnets (if needed)
Estimated Time
12 minutes
Steps
- Explain the Activity (1 minute)
• Describe how mapping a timeline can make progress visible and inspire continued effort.
• Assign each color of sticky note a category:- Color A: Major milestones (e.g., completed a program, sober anniversary)
- Color B: Key supports (people, resources, events)
- Color C: Personal breakthroughs or insights
- Individual Timeline Creation (6 minutes)
• Give each participant a stack of sticky notes and a pen.
• Ask them to write one event or support per note, including a date or approximate time.
• Instruct participants to place their notes in chronological order on the wall or board, building a horizontal “journey line.” - Peer Sharing & Reflection (4 minutes)
• Invite 2–3 volunteers to briefly walk the group through their timeline:- Highlight a milestone they feel proud of.
- Point out a support they found most impactful.
• Encourage fellow members to offer affirmations or ask one clarifying question.
- Group Debrief (1 minute)
• Reflect on patterns noticed across timelines: common supports, shared turning points.

Facilitator Tips
- Encourage Specificity: Prompt participants to note dates or contexts (e.g., “3 months sober” vs. “a few months ago”).
- Balance Sharing: If time is tight, select volunteers who haven’t spoken yet.
- Highlight Connections: Draw lines or arrows between related events on different timelines to visualize peer support.
- Validate Progress: Offer genuine praise (“I see so many milestones—great work!”).
Next Step: Use insights from your timeline to inform the “My Success Timeline” and “Setting Intentions” sections on the Recovery Reflection Worksheet.
