Lesson Plan

Soft Skills Superpowers

Students will identify and practice four essential soft skills—communication, active listening, teamwork, and empathy—through engaging group tasks and reflections, building habits they can apply in class and everyday life.

Soft skills are vital for collaboration, relationship-building, and future success. Introducing and practicing these skills in 7th grade lays the foundation for confident, effective learners and communicators.

Audience

7th Grade Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Hands-on group activities with guided reflection

Materials

Whiteboard and Markers, Timer or Stopwatch, Soft Skills Scenario Cards, Empathy Meter Chart, Teamwork Challenge Worksheet, and Active Listening Checklist

Prep

Prepare and Review Materials

10 minutes

  • Print and cut out the Soft Skills Scenario Cards.
  • Photocopy the Teamwork Challenge Worksheet for each group.
  • Print the Empathy Meter Chart and post on the wall or distribute mini-copies.
  • Review the Active Listening Checklist and ensure you understand each step.
  • Arrange tables/chairs for small-group work and set up the whiteboard and timer.

Step 1

Introduction and Learning Goals

5 minutes

  • Greet students and explain that today they’ll build their soft skills superpowers: communication, active listening, teamwork, and empathy.
  • Write the four skills on the whiteboard and briefly define each.
  • Share the objectives: practice each skill through interactive tasks and reflect on how to apply them in real life.

Step 2

Active Listening Warm-Up

7 minutes

  • Pair students and give each pair an Active Listening Checklist.
  • Assign roles: Speaker and Listener.
  • Speaker shares a recent personal experience for 1 minute; Listener uses the checklist to guide paraphrasing and asking open questions.
  • After 2 minutes, partners switch roles.
  • Debrief: Ask a few volunteers how the checklist helped them focus on listening.

Step 3

Teamwork Challenge

10 minutes

  • Form groups of four and distribute the Teamwork Challenge Worksheet.
  • Explain the quick design challenge (e.g., build the tallest paper tower using limited supplies).
  • Assign roles within each group: Facilitator, Recorder, Builder, Timekeeper.
  • Use the worksheet to plan, assign tasks, and reflect on team communication and decision-making.
  • After 8 minutes, have groups share one success and one area to improve.

Step 4

Scenario Role-Play

5 minutes

  • Hand each group one of the Soft Skills Scenario Cards.
  • Give groups 2 minutes to plan a short role-play demonstrating the scenario (e.g., resolving a conflict).
  • Perform quickly for the class. After each, classmates use the Empathy Meter Chart to rate how well empathy was shown (1–5) and offer one positive note.

Step 5

Debrief and Reflection

3 minutes

  • Lead a whole-class discussion: Which skill was most challenging? Which felt most natural?
  • Ask students to write one personal goal on the board: how they will practice a soft skill this week.
  • Summarize key takeaways and encourage students to look for “superpower” moments in everyday interactions.
