The student will collaboratively identify and agree upon 3-5 personalized positive norms to foster a respectful and productive individual learning experience in the classroom.
Establishing clear personal norms helps the student understand expectations for their behavior and interaction, creating a safe and inclusive space where they feel valued and can learn best. This promotes self-awareness and positive choices.
Audience
2nd Grade Student (Individual Support - Tier 3)
Time
30 minutes
Approach
One-on-one guided discussion and personalized reflection activity.
Engage the student with a question: "What do you think 'norms' are, especially for you in our classroom?" (Guide discussion, clarifying that norms are shared agreements, and we'll focus on their personal agreements for a good learning experience).
Facilitate a brief discussion about why agreements are important for their own learning and getting along with others. "How can good personal norms help you learn your best and feel good in our classroom?"
Instruct the student to brainstorm ideas for their personal classroom norms. Encourage them to think about how they want to treat others, how they want to learn, and how they want to feel in the classroom. The Our Class Compass: My Personal Path Slide Deck will provide guiding questions.
Provide one-on-one support, prompting deeper thinking and helping them articulate their ideas.
Step 4
Share and Discuss
7 minutes
Discuss the brainstormed norms with the student.
As they share, write down their unique ideas on the My Personal Compass Activity sheet or a whiteboard, helping them refine and clarify their thoughts.
Review the chosen 3-5 personal norms with the student.
Lead a personal agreement: "Do you agree that these will be your personal norms for our class?" (Encourage a verbal affirmation).
Explain that these norms will be their personal guide, or 'compass,' for making positive choices in the classroom. Discuss how these norms will be visible or regularly reviewed.
Slide Deck
What Are My Personal Norms?
• Rules for me? • Agreements for me? • Expectations for me?
What do you think 'personal norms' are for you in our class?
Welcome the student and introduce the concept of 'personal norms.' Explain that today you'll work together to create their own 'personal compass' for how they can work and interact positively in the classroom.
Why Do I Need Them?
• To help me learn my best. • To make our classroom a safe place for me. • To help me treat others with kindness.
How can good personal norms help you in our classroom?
Discuss with the student why having personal agreements is important for them, specifically in school. Emphasize that these norms will help them learn their best and feel comfortable and safe.
Brainstorm My Personal Compass
Let's think about:
• How do I want to treat others?
• How do I want to learn in our class?
• How do I want to feel in our classroom?
Let's write down your best ideas on your activity sheet!
Explain that the student will now think about their own ideas for personal class norms. Provide guiding questions to help them reflect on how they want to act, learn, and feel in the classroom.
Share My Ideas!
What are your best ideas for your personal class compass?
Let's find your top agreements together!
Discuss the student's brainstormed ideas. Help them refine and consolidate similar ideas. Focus on identifying the most important ones for them.
