Organize Like A Pro Lesson Plan

Students will learn proactive organizational skills by setting up a weekly planner, applying time-blocking strategies, and organizing a small project. They will complete a project plan and receive a personalized permission form to join a follow-up small group for deeper support.

Building proactive organization skills enhances homework completion, reduces stress, and fosters self-management. Engaging families through a permission form strengthens home–school partnerships and supports Tier 2 intervention readiness.

Organize Like A Pro

Proactive Organizational Skills for 7th Graders
30-Minute Lesson | Tier 1

Welcome the students to today’s session. Introduce yourself and state: “Today we’re learning how to organize like a pro by setting up planners, using time blocking, and planning a small project.” Ask: “What makes it hard to keep track of assignments?” and record responses on the board.

Lesson Objective & Benefits

• Learn to set up a weekly planner
• Apply time-blocking for tasks
• Organize a small project plan
• Receive permission form for follow-up support

Explain the four main objectives and why each matters: improved homework completion, reduced stress, and stronger self-management. Emphasize the added benefit of family involvement through the small-group permission form.

Planner Setup

• Distribute your Student Planner Template
• Fill in today’s date and upcoming 7-day view
• List at least three upcoming tasks (e.g., project steps, homework)

Distribute the Student Planner Template (#student-planner-template-orga-pro). Model filling in today’s date and the next 7 days on the whiteboard. Then list three tasks (e.g., research topic, draft outline, review notes). Invite students to fill in their own planners.

Time-Blocking Strategy

• Assign specific time slots to each task
• Example: 20 min research, 15 min drafting
• Add time blocks to your planner for project steps
• Use the timer to focus on one block at a time

Define time blocking: dedicating fixed time slots to tasks. Draw an example on the board (e.g., 10–10:20 AM = research). Start a 5-minute timer to show focus. Encourage students to add similar blocks to their planners.

Project Organization Practice

• In pairs, use the Project Planning Worksheet
• Outline project steps, deadlines, and needed resources
• Update your planner based on this worksheet
• Teacher circulates to provide feedback

Pair students and hand out the Project Planning Worksheet (#project-planning-worksheet-orga-pro). Instruct pairs to outline steps, deadlines, and resources. Circulate, offer feedback, and highlight connections back to their planners.

Permission Form & Next Steps

• Take home the Small Group Permission Form
• Review with your family and return signed
• Small-group support offers deeper planning help
• Recap: Use planners daily and time-block tasks

Distribute the Small Group Permission Form (#small-group-permission-form-orga-pro). Explain that this form invites family support and grants access to deeper organizational help. Recap key strategies and remind students to return signed forms.
