Understanding and Managing Your Feelings During the Festive Season
What's one word that describes how you feel about the holidays?
Welcome students and introduce the lesson. Ask for a single word to describe how they feel about the holidays. Emphasize that all feelings are okay.
Our Journey Today
- Identify common holiday emotions
- Understand why these emotions arise
- Develop healthy coping strategies
- Promote well-being during the holidays
Explain the objective clearly. This lesson is about giving them tools, not telling them how to feel.
The Holiday Emotion Spectrum
The holiday season can bring a mix of feelings. It's not always just one emotion!
- Joy & Excitement: Gifts, celebrations, time off
- Stress & Pressure: Family gatherings, gift expectations, busy schedules
- Sadness & Loneliness: Missing loved ones, unmet expectations
- Obligation & Guilt: Feeling like you should be happy, doing things you don't want to
- Anticipation & Hope: Looking forward to new memories
Prompt students to think about these different feelings. Give examples if needed, but encourage them to think broadly.
Your Holiday Experience
Let's take some time to reflect individually.
- What specific situations or expectations during the holidays might trigger different emotions for you?
- Think about family, friends, social media, and personal desires.
(Complete the Holiday Emotion Exploration Worksheet)
Introduce the worksheet. Explain that this is a personal reflection to help them think about their own experiences.
Sharing Our Stories
In small groups, discuss your reflections:
- What were some common emotions you identified?
- Were there any surprising emotions?
- How do you think others might experience similar feelings?
(Use the Holiday Emotions Discussion Guide)
Explain that after individual reflection, they'll share in small groups. Emphasize respectful listening and sharing.
Toolbox for Your Feelings
Now that we've identified emotions, how can we manage them?
We can't control everything, but we can control our responses.
- What are some healthy ways to deal with stress?
- What about sadness or loneliness?
- How can we manage expectations?
(Complete the Holiday Coping Strategies Activity)
Transition to coping strategies. Brainstorm ideas as a class first, then introduce the activity.
Mindful Holidays Ahead!
Remember:
- Acknowledge your feelings: It's okay to feel whatever you feel.
- Set realistic expectations: Holidays aren't always perfect.
- Practice self-care: Do things that make you feel good.
- Communicate: Talk to trusted adults or friends.
- Seek support: It's brave to ask for help.
What is one new strategy you'll try this holiday season?
Reiterate key takeaways. Encourage students to practice these skills and seek help if needed.
