Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: How's the Weather?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students about the actual weather outside today. Use the My Inner Weather Report Slide Deck (Slide 1) to introduce the idea of inner weather.
    - "Just like the weather outside, our feelings can change throughout the day. Sometimes we feel sunny and happy, other times cloudy and a little sad, or maybe even stormy and frustrated!"
    - Ask students to share a feeling they are having right now, encouraging them to think of a weather word to describe it (e.g., "I feel a little rainy today").

Step 2

Introducing Inner Weather

10 minutes

  • Use the My Inner Weather Report Slide Deck (Slides 2-5) to introduce different feelings and their corresponding weather metaphors.
    - Discuss each feeling: Happy (Sunny), Sad (Cloudy), Mad (Stormy), Calm (Breezy). Ask guiding questions like, "What does your body feel like when you are sunny and happy?" or "What might make you feel cloudy?"
    - Emphasize that all feelings are okay and that feelings change.

Step 3

Weather Feelings Activity

10-15 minutes

  • Introduce the Weather Feelings Activity Cards. Hold up each card (Sunny, Cloudy, Stormy, Breezy) and review the associated feeling.
    - Explain that you will read different scenarios, and students will hold up the card that best matches how they might feel in that situation.
