Review Materials
5 minutes
Review the Personal Climate Compass Guide lesson plan, Navigating My School World slide deck, My School Climate Contribution Rubric, and Reflecting on My Impact journal. Familiarize yourself with the rubric criteria and discussion points.
Step 1
Introduction to Climate Compass
5 minutes
Begin by showing the student the Navigating My School World slide deck (Slides 1-2). Explain that today we will be thinking about how each of us contributes to our school's climate. Ask: "What does 'school climate' mean to you?" Allow the student to share their initial thoughts.
Step 2
Exploring the Rubric
10 minutes
Introduce the My School Climate Contribution Rubric. Go through each section and criterion together. Clarify any vocabulary or concepts the student finds challenging. Emphasize that this is a tool for self-reflection and growth, not just grading. Guide the student to start filling out the rubric based on their own perceptions.
Step 3
Self-Assessment and Goal Setting
10 minutes
Give the student time to complete their self-assessment using the My School Climate Contribution Rubric. Encourage honest reflection. Once they have completed it, guide them to identify one or two areas where they want to improve their contribution to the school climate. Facilitate the setting of a personal, actionable goal based on their self-assessment.
Step 4
Reflecting on Impact
5 minutes
Distribute the Reflecting on My Impact journal. Ask the student to write down their goal and a few sentences about why this goal is important and how they plan to achieve it. Conclude by reiterating the importance of their individual contributions to a positive school climate.

Your Climate Compass
How do you make our school a great place to be?
Welcome the student and explain that today's lesson is about understanding how their actions contribute to the overall feeling of our school. Ask: "What do you think 'school climate' means?" Listen to their responses and guide them towards understanding it as the 'feel' of the school. Use simple analogies if needed (e.g., weather for the day, mood in a room).
Every Action Matters
Just like a compass helps you find your way, your actions help guide our school's 'feeling.'
Every student, teacher, and staff member plays a role!
Introduce the idea that every person in the school, including them, is like a part of a compass that helps guide the school's direction and atmosphere. Explain that we'll be looking at specific ways they contribute.
