Mirror Moment: Check-In

Welcome to our Mirror Moment!

Today, we’ll use a “mirror” to help us set and stick to a personal goal.

When I say “mirror,” think of one behavior you want to focus on and be ready to share.

Use an enthusiastic tone to set a positive tone. Invite students to look into their “mirror” and think silently about their goal before sharing.

Set Your Personal Goal

My goal for today is:

Encourage students to keep goals specific and achievable. Provide examples if needed (e.g., ‘I will raise my hand before speaking.’).

Plan Your Actions

What can you do to reach your goal?

• Action 1: ___________________
• Action 2: ___________________

Prompt students to think of concrete, actionable steps. Model one action yourself first.

Exit Reflection

How confident are you in reaching your goal today?

Circle one: 1 2 3 4 5

Next steps I will take:

Remind students this helps track progress. Encourage honest ratings.

Activity

Handheld Mirror Reflections

Purpose: Guide each student to use a handheld mirror as a focus tool for saying and seeing their goal, then answering guided self-monitoring questions.

Materials:

  • One small handheld mirror per student
  • Prompt sheet printed on cardstock (optional laminated cards)

Time: 7 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Distribute one handheld mirror and a prompt sheet to each student.
  2. Ask students to hold their mirror up, look at themselves, and silently repeat their personal goal.
  3. Read each prompt aloud, pausing between questions to give students thinking time. Students can either whisper their answers quietly or think them through in their heads:
    • “What is my goal for today?”
    • “Why is this goal important to me?”
    • “What is one thing I can do right now to work toward my goal?”
    • “How will I know I’m making progress?”
  4. Circulate and quietly remind students to stay focused on their reflections. Offer one-on-one support if a student seems stuck.

Teacher Tips:

  • Model the process first: hold up your mirror, think aloud your goal and answers.
  • Encourage students to use kind self-talk as they look at themselves (e.g., “I can do this!”).
  • Keep the room quiet or play soft instrumental music to help students concentrate.
  • After 3–4 minutes, signal that it’s time to finish up and prepare for the next step (journal reflection).

Next Step: Transition into Mirror Journal Prompts so students can record or draw their thoughts in writing.
