Respect Radar Lesson Plan

Students will learn to detect classroom conflicts using the “Respect Radar,” practice respectful communication through scenario analysis and role-plays, and identify personal action steps for managing disagreements.

Building respectful communication and problem-solving skills helps create a positive classroom culture, reduces disruptions, and empowers students to resolve conflicts constructively.

Step 1

Introduction to Respect Radar

5 minutes

  • Display the Respect Radar Poster and ask: "What does respect look like and sound like in our classroom?"
  • Define the Respect Radar as noticing small issues early and addressing them with kindness.
  • Share lesson objective and explain how respectful communication prevents conflicts.

Step 2

Scenario Analysis

10 minutes

  • Organize students into small groups and distribute 2–3 Conflict Scenario Cards per group.
  • In each group, read scenarios, identify the core conflict, and brainstorm respectful response strategies.
  • Record key ideas and respectful language on chart paper.

Step 3

Role-Play Practice

10 minutes

  • Have each group choose one scenario to role-play twice: first showing an unhelpful response, then a respectful one.
  • Classmates observe and give feedback on use of active listening, "I" statements, and calm tone.
  • Teacher highlights effective phrases and body language.

Step 4

Reflection and Closing

5 minutes

  • Students complete the Respect Radar Reflection Sheet, naming one personal action to improve their respectful communication.
  • Invite volunteers to share their reflections and commitments.
  • Summarize key Respect Radar steps and encourage daily use to keep our classroom positive.

Mindful Moments Lesson Plan

Students will learn simple mindfulness techniques like deep breathing to calm their bodies and minds and choose one tool to use when they feel upset or distracted.

Introducing mindfulness to 2nd graders helps them notice feelings, practice calm-down tools early, and build focus and confidence in a supportive classroom.

Step 1

Welcome and Introduce Calm Tools

5 minutes

  • Show the Mindful Moments Poster and ask: “How do you feel when you’re upset? What can help you feel calm?”
  • Explain that today we’ll learn special tools to help us feel calm and ready to learn.

Step 2

Guided Breathing Practice

7 minutes

  • Have students sit tall or cross-legged with hands on their laps.
  • Guide 3 big, slow breaths together: inhale for 3, hold 1, exhale for 3.
  • Use the timer or clap to keep the rhythm.
  • Encourage them to put one hand on their belly and notice it rise and fall.

Step 3

Explore Calm-Down Cards

8 minutes

  • Show 2–3 of the Mindfulness Prompt Cards one at a time.
  • Explain each picture and what it shows (e.g., “This card is for deep breathing like a flower.”).
  • Have students turn to a partner and practice the action on the card together.

Step 4

Partner Share and Visual Chart

6 minutes

  • On chart paper, draw three columns with headings like “When,” “Tool I Choose,” and “Where.”
  • Ask pairs to share an idea: when they might feel upset, which tool they’d use, and where (at their desk, on the carpet).
  • Write their responses in the chart for all to see.

Step 5

Class Calm Promise

4 minutes

  • Invite 2–3 volunteers to show their favorite calm tool one more time.
  • Lead the class in a calm promise: place hand on heart and say together, “When I feel big feelings, I will try my calm tool.”
  • Remind students they can use these tools anytime they need a little calm.

Calm Tool: Deep Breathing

• Breathe in (hands up)
• Hold a moment

Show the Deep Breathing card. Teach students to breathe like a flower: hands up when you breathe in, hands down when you breathe out. Practice 3 times.

Calm Tool: Look & Name

Show the Look & Name card. Explain: Look around and name 5 things you see. Practice naming together.

Practice with a Friend

• Pick a Calm Tool card
• Show your partner
• Try it together

Have students turn to a partner. Give each pair a Calm Tool card. Ask them to practice the tool together.

When I feel big feelings,
I will use my calm tool.

Lead the class in a calm promise. Ask students to place a hand on their heart and say together: “When I feel big feelings, I will use my calm tool.”

Mindfulness Prompt Cards

Use these simple cues whenever you need a quick reset. Print, cut, and place around the room or keep at your desk.


🧘‍♀️ Deep Breathing
Inhale for 4 seconds ▶ Hold for 2 seconds ▶ Exhale for 4 seconds.
Repeat 4–6 times until you feel calmer.


🖐️ 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding
• 5 things you can see
• 4 things you can touch
• 3 things you can hear
• 2 things you can smell
• 1 thing you can taste


💭 Positive Self-Talk
Catch a negative thought and replace it with:
“I am calm. I can handle this.”
Repeat 2–3 times.


🔢 Counting to 10
Slowly count from 1 to 10 in your head.
Breathe evenly as you count.


🚶 Movement Break
Stand and stretch your arms overhead.
Walk in place or around your desk for 30 seconds.


🌈 Visualization
Close your eyes and picture a peaceful place.
Imagine the sights, sounds, and feelings for 30 seconds.
