Mindful Moments for Little Minds

Introduce mindfulness activities

This lesson introduces 1st-grade students to mindfulness through simple breathing exercises and visualization techniques. These activities are designed to enhance focus and calmness, providing students with tools to manage their emotions and improve concentration. Step 1

Introduction

  • Gather students in a circle on the floor.
  • Briefly explain what mindfulness is: "Mindfulness is paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them."
  • Tell students they will learn fun ways to help their minds feel calm and focused.

Step 2

Breathing Exercise

5 mins

  • Guide students through a simple breathing exercise:
    • Inhale slowly through the nose for a count of 3.
    • Hold the breath for a count of 2.
    • Exhale slowly through the mouth for a count of 4.
  • Repeat this cycle 3-4 times, encouraging students to focus on their breath.

Visualization Activity

  • Hand out the Visualization Worksheet.
  • Guide students through a visualization exercise:
    • Ask them to close their eyes and imagine a peaceful place (like a beach or garden).
    • Describe the scene using sensory details (e.g., "Feel the warm sun on your skin, hear the gentle waves").
  • Allow students to draw their peaceful place on the worksheet.
