Script

Lesson Script for Mastering Me

This detailed script is designed to guide you, the teacher, through each of the 5 sessions. Follow the word-for-word instructions, and feel free to adapt your tone as needed while ensuring that all key points are covered.

Session 1: Introduction & Self-Awareness (30 minutes)

Teacher: "Good morning everyone! Today, we’re beginning our journey called 'Mastering Me.' Over the next five sessions, we will explore ways to manage our feelings and build our inner strength. Let’s start by talking about self-management."

Pause for a moment to allow students to think.

Teacher: "In your own words, what do you think 'self-management' means? Feel free to share with a partner or think about it silently."

Teacher: "Alright, let’s look at our slide deck. [Advance to the first slide: 'Welcome to Mastering Me']"

Teacher (pointing to the slide): "This slide introduces self-management. It asks us: What is self-management? Why is it important? It’s okay if your definition is a little different from someone else’s – that's what makes our discussion interesting!"

Allow a few responses from the class.

Teacher: "Next, we are going to play a quick game from our Self-Management Challenge to get started. I want everyone to participate energetically. This game will help us warm up our minds around the idea of managing our emotions."

After the game has concluded, continue:

Teacher: "Before we finish today’s session, I want to introduce the Self-Management Worksheet. This worksheet will guide you through the activities we do in each session, so make sure to keep it with you and add your thoughts as we go along. Great work today!"

Session 2: Understanding Emotions (30 minutes)

Teacher: "Welcome back, everyone. Today we will explore our emotions and learn more about what they mean. Emotions can sometimes feel overwhelming, but when we understand them better, we can manage them more effectively."

Teacher: "Let’s start by reading a brief passage from our Reading Material: Understanding Emotions. Please open your books or screens and follow along as I read aloud."

Read the passage clearly, pausing between paragraphs to ensure understanding.

Teacher: "Now that we’ve read, what are some emotions that you noticed? Can anyone share a time when they felt a strong emotion and what it felt like?"

Encourage student sharing. After a few responses, continue:

Teacher: "Great sharing, everyone. I’d like you to use your Self-Management Worksheet and jot down any thoughts or feelings that come up as we discuss. This will help you track your own progress over these sessions."

Teacher: "Next, we will use the Discussion Guide: Coping Strategies to talk about ways to cope with our emotions. Let’s work together to explore strategies that might be helpful when we feel overwhelmed."

Facilitate a brief discussion, prompting students with questions such as 'What helps you calm down?' and 'How do you know when you need a break?'

Teacher: "Thank you for your thoughts. Remember that every emotion is valid and understanding them is the first step towards managing them well."

Session 3: Coping Strategies & Group Discussion (30 minutes)

Teacher: "Hello everyone, welcome to Session 3. Today, we’re focusing on coping strategies—tools you can use when emotions feel too big or overwhelming."

Teacher: "Let’s review some coping strategies we already talked about. For example, have any of you tried deep breathing, talking to someone, or writing in a journal? Feel free to raise your hand and share your experiences."

Facilitate sharing and encourage responses from multiple students.

Teacher: "Now, I’d like to bring up some additional points from our [Slide Deck for Self-Management Skills]. Please look at the slide titled 'Coping Strategies'. Notice the list on the board. I want you to think about which of these strategies you have used or might want to try out next time you’re feeling stressed."

Teacher: "Let’s open your Self-Management Worksheet and write down one coping strategy that you believe might help you when faced with difficult emotions. After a minute, I’ll ask a few volunteers to share their thoughts."

Pause for reflection and note-taking. Then invite a few students to share.

Teacher: "Excellent insights! Always remember that coping strategies can be personal—what works for one person might not work for another. Use this time to discover what best fits you."

Session 4: Practical Activities & Emotional Regulation (30 minutes)

Teacher: "Welcome to Session 4! Today, we are going to put what we’ve learned into practice through a series of fun activities that focus on emotional regulation."

Teacher: "I’m going to guide you through a hands-on activity using our Activity Instructions: Emotional Regulation Exercises. First, please form pairs or small groups."

Teacher: "In your groups, try out the exercises. I want you to discuss and experiment with techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, or even a quick physical activity to help shift your mood."

Circulate the room, provide support, and encourage conversation among students.

Teacher: "After you’ve had a few minutes, gather back together. Can anyone share what technique worked well for them, or if they discovered something new that helped them feel better?"

Teacher: "Great sharing! Before we end this session, please update your Self-Management Worksheet with any new insights or techniques you learned today."

Session 5: Review, Game, and Reflection (30 minutes)

Teacher: "Welcome to our final session of 'Mastering Me.' Today, we’re going to review everything we’ve covered, play one more round of our fun game, and reflect on our progress."

Teacher: "Let’s start by briefly recapping what we learned in our previous sessions. We talked about what self-management is, understanding our emotions, different coping strategies, and practical activities for emotional regulation."

Teacher: "Now, it’s time for our final round of the Self-Management Challenge! Let’s get ready to play and show off all the great techniques you have learned."

Lead the game and encourage enthusiastic participation from all students.

Teacher: "I hope you enjoyed the game. Now, let’s have a group discussion. I want you to think about how you’ve changed over these sessions. What do you feel you’ve learned about yourself? How can you use these tools in your everyday life?"

Teacher: "Please use your Self-Management Worksheet to jot down any reflections or personal goals for the future. Remember, these skills are something you can practice every day to enhance your wellbeing."

Teacher: "Thank you everyone for your participation and openness over these sessions. I encourage you to continue journaling your thoughts and practicing these strategies. ‘Mastering Me’ isn’t just about this lesson—it’s about equipping you for life. Great job, everyone!"

Reading

Understanding Emotions

Emotions are powerful feelings that influence how we think and act. They are a natural part of being human and can be both positive and challenging. In this reading, you will learn what emotions are, what causes them, and how they impact our behavior.

What Are Emotions?

Emotions are feelings that come from the way we interpret and respond to the world around us. Some common emotions include happiness, sadness, anger, and fear. Each emotion has a unique effect on our body and mind. For example, when we are happy, we might smile and feel energetic, while sadness might make us feel tired and withdrawn.

What Triggers Emotions?

There are many things that can trigger our emotions. These may include:

  • Events: A surprise party can make us feel joyful, while a difficult test might make us nervous or frustrated.
  • Thoughts: Sometimes, even thinking about a past event can bring back strong feelings.
  • Interactions: Our conversations and relationships with others can also influence our mood.

Understanding what sets off our emotions is the first step in managing them. When we recognize these triggers, we can learn to respond in healthier ways.

How Do Emotions Affect Us?

Emotions affect both our actions and our decisions. For example, feeling scared might make us run away from a situation, while excitement can encourage us to try something new. By understanding our emotions, we can take control of our reactions, rather than letting our feelings control us.

Why Is It Important To Understand Your Emotions?

When we understand our emotions:

  • Self-Regulation: We can better control our actions and responses.
  • Communication: We can express our feelings more clearly and connect with others.
  • Problem Solving: We learn to find ways to cope with difficult emotions, which helps reduce stress and anxiety.

Take a moment to reflect on your own experiences. Think about a time when you felt a strong emotion. What triggered it? How did you respond? Understanding these moments can help you build better strategies for the future.

Remember, every emotion you feel is valid. The goal is not to eliminate emotions, but to understand and manage them so they serve you rather than control you.

Enjoy this reading and consider how these insights might apply to your daily life as you continue on your journey to mastering self-management.
