Slide Deck
Your Inner Coach: Mastering Your Future
What does it mean to be 'in charge' of your own life? How can you achieve what you want?
Greet students and start with a brief, engaging question to get them thinking about personal success. Explain that today's lesson is about giving them tools to be more successful. Refer to the 'Warm-Up: What's Your Superpower?' in the My Inner Coach Blueprint.
What is Self-Management?
It's about taking charge of YOU!
- Managing your time
- Managing your emotions
- Managing your actions
It's like having a coach inside your head helping you make good choices and reach your goals!
Introduce the concept of self-management as taking responsibility for your actions and goals. Explain that being your own 'life coach' means guiding yourself towards your best self. Ask students what they think self-management means.
Why Set Goals?
Goals are like a map for your life!
- They give you direction.
- They help you focus your energy.
- They show you what's possible.
- They help you grow!
Transition to the importance of goals. Ask students why setting goals might be helpful. Emphasize that goals give direction and purpose. Explain that this is the 'Why' part of being your own life coach.
Goal Setting: The MAP Approach
Measurable: How will you know when you've reached it?
- Can you count it?
- Can you see the progress?
Example: Instead of 'I want to get better at math,' try 'I will raise my math test score by 10 points.'
Introduce the MAP acronym for goal setting. Explain that 'Measurable' means you can tell if you've achieved it. Provide an example like 'I will study more' vs. 'I will study for 30 minutes every evening.'
Goal Setting: The MAP Approach
Actionable: What specific steps can you take?
- Is it something you can do?
- Does it have a clear verb?
Example: Instead of 'I want to be more organized,' try 'I will clean my backpack for 10 minutes every Friday afternoon.'
Explain 'Actionable' goals. These are goals that you can actively do. Provide an example: 'I want to be happier' vs. 'I will compliment one person each day to spread positivity and boost my own mood.'
Goal Setting: The MAP Approach
Positive: Focus on what you will do!
- Is it stated in a positive way?
- Does it inspire you?
Example: Instead of 'I won't be late for school,' try 'I will wake up 15 minutes earlier to ensure I leave on time.'
Explain 'Positive' goals. Frame goals in a way that focuses on what you will do, not what you won't do. Provide an example: 'I won't procrastinate' vs. 'I will start my homework within 1 hour of getting home from school.'
Your Turn! Brainstorm Your Goals
Now it's time to think about your future!
Using the MAP approach, let's brainstorm some goals for different areas of your life:
- Academic
- Personal
- Social
Summarize the MAP approach and introduce the Goal Brainstorming Web activity. Explain that they will now apply what they've learned to their own lives.
Reflect and Deep Dive
Choose one goal that really excites you.
- Why is this goal important to you?
- How will achieving it make a difference?
- What's the first small step you can take?
Introduce the journal activity. Emphasize the importance of reflecting on why these goals matter to them. This helps build intrinsic motivation. Refer to the Reflecting on My Aspirations.
You Are Your Own Life Coach!
Remember, you have the power to guide yourself towards your dreams.
- Set clear goals.
- Take action.
- Believe in yourself!
What's one small step you can take today?
Conclude by reiterating the power of being their own life coach. Encourage them to keep practicing these skills. Collect materials and prepare for the cool-down. Refer to the One Step Forward Exit Ticket.
