Activity

Hallway Heroes: Our Safe Walking Adventure!

Objective

Students will be able to identify and demonstrate safe walking practices in the school hallway.

Materials

  • "Hallway Hero" badges/stickers (optional)
  • Open space (classroom or actual hallway)

Instructions

Step 1: What's a Hallway? (5-7 minutes)

  • Teacher Script: "Good morning, future Hallway Heroes! Today, we're going on an adventure right here in our school. But first, can anyone tell me, what is a hallway? What do we use it for?"
  • Discussion: Guide students to understand hallways as shared spaces for moving between rooms.
  • Question: "Why do you think it's extra important to be safe in the hallway compared to walking on the playground?"

Step 2: Brainstorming Safe Steps (10-12 minutes)

  • Teacher Script: "You got it! Hallways are busy places, and we need to be super safe and respectful of everyone. So, what does a 'Hallway Hero' look like when they're walking? What does a 'Hallway Hero' sound like?"
  • Brainstorm: Write student ideas on the board (e.g., "walking feet," "quiet voices," "hands to self," "look where you're going," "stay on the right").
  • Emphasize Key Rules: Focus on walking, keeping hands and feet to self, and using quiet voices.

Step 3: Practice Makes Perfect! (15-20 minutes)

  • Teacher Script: "Alright, my brave Hallway Heroes! Now it's time to practice our super safe walking skills! Let's pretend our classroom is a hallway. I'll show you first how a Hallway Hero walks."
  • Demonstration: Teacher models safe walking (quiet feet, hands at sides, looking forward).
  • Guided Practice: Have students practice walking safely in a line, either around the classroom or in the actual hallway if possible and appropriate for a short, controlled practice. Provide immediate, positive feedback. "I see quiet feet!" "Great job keeping your hands to yourself!"

Step 4: Become a Hallway Hero! (5-8 minutes)

  • Teacher Script: "You've all done an amazing job practicing! Every time you walk safely in the hallway, you are being a true Hallway Hero. To celebrate your super skills, I have a special badge/sticker for our new Hallway Heroes!"
  • Reward: Distribute "Hallway Hero" badges or stickers to students who demonstrated effort and understanding. Reinforce that being a Hallway Hero is about consistently using safe walking habits.

Step 5: Quick Reflection (3-5 minutes)

  • Teacher Script: "Before we finish our adventure, what's one important thing you learned today about being a Hallway Hero and walking safely?"
  • Share Out: Allow a few students to share their takeaways.
  • Closing: "Remember, every day is a chance to be a Hallway Hero! Let's keep our hallways safe and calm for everyone!"
