Germ Busters
Become Germ Busters and learn how proper hygiene keeps us and our community healthy!
Welcome the class and introduce the lesson. Explain that today they’ll become ‘Germ Busters’ to learn how to keep themselves and others healthy through fun activities.
Today's Objectives
• Identify and describe essential hygiene steps
• Observe germ transfer in a fun simulation
• Reflect on proper handwashing techniques
Read through each objective aloud. Ask students to listen for what they will be doing (watching clips, doing a simulation, reflecting).
Warm-Up: What Are Germs?
• What are germs?
• Where do germs come from?
• Brainstorm common spots germs hide (e.g., doorknobs, phones).
Lead a 5-minute warm-up. Ask: “What are germs and where do they come from?” Record answers on the board. Prompt students to think of places germs hide.
Queue the Handwashing Movie Clip. Play (~2 minutes). After the clip, ask: “What were the key steps shown for proper handwashing?” Take 1–2 responses.
Play the Germ Demonstration Clip (~2 minutes). Then ask: “How did the demonstration show germ transfer? Why is soap effective?” Discuss surprising observations.
Germ Simulation Activity
In pairs, sprinkle glitter or UV powder on Partner A’s hands.
Shake hands and pass an object.
Observe glitter transfer.
Both partners wash hands with soap & water or sanitizer.
Inspect under light or check for remaining glitter.
Explain the simulation: one partner gets glitter or UV powder; they shake hands and pass objects; then both wash hands. Circulate to support and observe.
Reflection & Cool-Down
Use the Germ Busters Reflection Worksheet to answer:
• List three steps of effective handwashing.
• Explain why each step matters.
• How will you share this knowledge with others?
Distribute the reflection worksheet. Give students 5 minutes to complete and remind them to write clearly. Collect for quick review.
Key Takeaways
• Proper handwashing requires at least 20 seconds and all five steps.
• Germs spread easily through touch—but soap removes them effectively.
• You can help others stay healthy by sharing what you’ve learned.
Review key points briefly. Invite students to share one thing they learned. Prepare to wrap up.
Thank You, Germ Busters!
Keep washing those hands and share your new skills with friends and family!
Thank students for participating. Remind them to practice good hygiene every day and to watch out for germs at home and school.
