Germ Busters Lesson Plan

Students will explore essential hygiene habits by watching movie clips, engaging in a germ-simulation activity, and reflecting on proper handwashing techniques.

Building strong hygiene routines in 6th graders prevents illness, fosters self-care confidence, and promotes a healthier classroom community.

Audience

6th Grade

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Movie clips, simulation, reflection

Materials

Handwashing Movie Clip, Germ Demonstration Clip, Germ Busters Reflection Worksheet, Glitter or UV Germ Simulation Powder, Soap and Water or Hand Sanitizer, and Paper Towels

Prep

Teacher Preparation

5 minutes

  • Queue up the digital clips: Handwashing Movie Clip and Germ Demonstration Clip
  • Print enough copies of the Germ Busters Reflection Worksheet for each student
  • Gather materials: glitter or UV germ powder, soap, water (or sanitizer), and paper towels
  • Arrange classroom near sink space or handwashing station

Step 1

Warm-Up Discussion

5 minutes

  • Ask students: “What are germs and where do they come from?”
  • Brainstorm common places germs hide (door handles, phones, etc.)
  • Record responses on whiteboard or chart paper

Step 2

Movie Clips & Guided Questions

10 minutes

  • Play the Handwashing Movie Clip (~2 minutes)
  • Ask: “What are the key steps shown for proper handwashing?”
  • Play the Germ Demonstration Clip (~2 minutes)
  • Discuss: “How did the demonstration show germ transfer? Why is soap effective?”
  • Encourage students to share any surprising observations

Step 3

Germ Simulation Activity

10 minutes

  • Pair students and sprinkle a small amount of glitter or UV germ powder on one student’s hands
  • Partners shake hands, pass objects, and then observe glitter transfer
  • Students perform proper handwashing at sink or use sanitizer
  • After washing, inspect hands under light (if using UV powder) or check for remaining glitter
  • Discuss which steps made the biggest difference in germ removal

Step 4

Reflection & Cool-Down

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Germ Busters Reflection Worksheet
  • Students answer prompts:
    • “List three steps of effective handwashing.”
    • “Explain why each step matters.”
    • “How will you share this knowledge with others?”
  • Collect worksheets for quick review and provide feedback

Slide Deck

Germ Busters

Become Germ Busters and learn how proper hygiene keeps us and our community healthy!

Welcome the class and introduce the lesson. Explain that today they’ll become ‘Germ Busters’ to learn how to keep themselves and others healthy through fun activities.

Today's Objectives

• Identify and describe essential hygiene steps
• Observe germ transfer in a fun simulation
• Reflect on proper handwashing techniques

Read through each objective aloud. Ask students to listen for what they will be doing (watching clips, doing a simulation, reflecting).

Warm-Up: What Are Germs?

• What are germs?
• Where do germs come from?
• Brainstorm common spots germs hide (e.g., doorknobs, phones).

Lead a 5-minute warm-up. Ask: “What are germs and where do they come from?” Record answers on the board. Prompt students to think of places germs hide.

Queue the Handwashing Movie Clip. Play (~2 minutes). After the clip, ask: “What were the key steps shown for proper handwashing?” Take 1–2 responses.

Play the Germ Demonstration Clip (~2 minutes). Then ask: “How did the demonstration show germ transfer? Why is soap effective?” Discuss surprising observations.

Germ Simulation Activity

  1. In pairs, sprinkle glitter or UV powder on Partner A’s hands.
  2. Shake hands and pass an object.
  3. Observe glitter transfer.
  4. Both partners wash hands with soap & water or sanitizer.
  5. Inspect under light or check for remaining glitter.

Explain the simulation: one partner gets glitter or UV powder; they shake hands and pass objects; then both wash hands. Circulate to support and observe.

Reflection & Cool-Down

Use the Germ Busters Reflection Worksheet to answer:
• List three steps of effective handwashing.
• Explain why each step matters.
• How will you share this knowledge with others?

Distribute the reflection worksheet. Give students 5 minutes to complete and remind them to write clearly. Collect for quick review.

Key Takeaways

• Proper handwashing requires at least 20 seconds and all five steps.
• Germs spread easily through touch—but soap removes them effectively.
• You can help others stay healthy by sharing what you’ve learned.

Review key points briefly. Invite students to share one thing they learned. Prepare to wrap up.

Thank You, Germ Busters!

Keep washing those hands and share your new skills with friends and family!

Thank students for participating. Remind them to practice good hygiene every day and to watch out for germs at home and school.
