Finding the Message in the Movie
Students will be able to evaluate how effectively the main themes of a novel are translated into the film adaptation.
Understanding how stories are told across different mediums helps students develop critical thinking skills, media literacy, and a deeper appreciation for both literature and film. It allows them to see how creative choices impact a message.

Teacher Preparation
15 minutes
- Review the Finding the Message in the Movie Lesson Plan and all linked materials.
- Select a short film clip (5-7 minutes) from a film adaptation of a novel that students have read. The clip should clearly demonstrate at least two of the key concepts (Visual Metaphor, Musical Cues, Symbolism, Thematic Consistency).
- Prepare to project the Themes on Film Slides.
- Make copies of the Film Theme Tracker Worksheet for each student.
- Ensure audio and visual equipment is working for the film clip.
Step 1
Theme Review
5 minutes
- Introduce the lesson (2 minutes): Begin by displaying the first slide of the Themes on Film Slides. Ask students: "Have you ever watched a movie based on a book you've read? What was similar? What was different?" Introduce the lesson title and objective. Use the Script for guiding questions.
- Activate Prior Knowledge (3 minutes): Briefly review the main themes of the novel (previously read by students) that the film clip is based on. Have students share one theme they remember and why it was important. Display themes on the slide deck.

Mind Map: Themes in Film
7 minutes
- Introduce Key Concepts (2 minutes): Transition to the key concepts: Visual Metaphor, Musical Cues, Symbolism, and Thematic Consistency using the Themes on Film Slides. Explain each briefly with examples.
- Mind Map Activity (5 minutes): Distribute the Film Theme Tracker Worksheet. Instruct students to create a quick mind map for one of the novel's themes, brainstorming how it could be shown in a movie using visual metaphors, music, or symbols. Encourage them to be creative.
Step 3
Evidence Hunt (Clips)
10 minutes
- Introduce Film Clip (1 minute): Explain that students will now watch a short clip from the film adaptation. Their task is to identify how the themes they just discussed are presented using the film techniques.
- Watch Clip and Track Evidence (7 minutes): Play the pre-selected film clip (5-7 minutes). As students watch, they should use their Film Theme Tracker Worksheet to note down examples of visual metaphors, musical cues, or symbolism that relate to the novel's themes.
- Pair-Share (2 minutes): Have students briefly share their findings with a partner.
Step 4
Class Discussion
8 minutes
- Facilitate Discussion (8 minutes): Lead a whole-class discussion using the Soundtrack and Theme Discussion prompts. Focus on the effectiveness of the film in translating the novel's themes. Encourage students to use specific examples from the clip and their Film Theme Tracker Worksheet. Ask questions like: "Which theme was most effectively conveyed? Why?" and "Were there any themes that were lost or changed?"

Symbolism
What is it?
- An object, person, or idea that represents something else, often a deeper meaning or theme.
Think: What does a dove usually symbolize?
Introduce Symbolism. Connect it to literary symbolism they might already know.
Thematic Consistency
What is it?
- How well the film adaptation maintains the original novel's core messages and themes.
Think: Does the movie feel like the book, even if some details are different?
Introduce Thematic Consistency. Explain why it's important for an adaptation to maintain the original message.

Theme Review (5 minutes)
Teacher: "Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to become movie critics and literary detectives all rolled into one. Have any of you ever watched a movie that was based on a book you've already read? Raise your hand if you have!"
(Pause for student responses. Encourage a few brief shares about what was similar or different.)
Teacher: "That's exactly what we're going to explore today. Our lesson is called Finding the Message in the Movie, and our objective is to evaluate how effectively the main themes of a novel are translated into its film adaptation. We'll be looking at how filmmakers take those big ideas from the page and bring them to life on the screen."
Teacher: "Before we dive into film, let's quickly jog our memories about the novel we just finished. What were some of the main themes, or the 'big ideas' and messages, that the author wanted us to understand? Think about what was really important in the story."

Teacher: "Now, I'm going to hand out the Film Theme Tracker Worksheet. On Part 1, you'll see a space for a 'Novel Themes Brainstorm.' I want you to pick one of the main themes we just reviewed from our novel. You have about 5 minutes for this."

Write down what you see or hear, which theme it represents, and how it helps convey that theme."
