Lesson Plan

Mirror Game Guide

Students will identify and label four basic emotions (happy, sad, mad, scared) in themselves and peers using facial cues and mirrors.

This lesson builds self-awareness, emotional vocabulary, and social skills by helping children recognize and express basic emotions, laying the foundation for healthy emotional development.

Audience

Pre-K

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Mirror and peer activities to explore and label emotions.

Materials

  • Feelings Faces Slides, - Teacher Script with Prompts, - Handheld Mirrors Set, and - Draw Your Feeling Sheet

Prep

Material Preparation

10 minutes

  • Print and cut enough Draw Your Feeling Sheet for each student.
  • Gather a Handheld Mirrors Set so every child has a mirror.
  • Load the Feelings Faces Slides on the classroom screen.
  • Review the Teacher Script with Prompts to familiarize with sample language and questions.

Step 1

Warm-Up Song

5 minutes

  • Sit in a circle and introduce the song “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”
  • Adapt lyrics to include “sad,” “mad,” and “scared” (e.g., “If you’re sad and you know it, cry boo-hoo”).
  • Encourage children to act out each emotion when sung.
  • Differentiation: Provide emotion cue cards for children who need extra visual support.

Step 2

Teacher Modeling

5 minutes

  • Display the first emotion slide from Feelings Faces Slides.
  • Stand before the class with a mirror and model the facial cues for that emotion, naming key features (e.g., “My eyebrows go up, my mouth turns down when I’m scared”).
  • Use prompts from Teacher Script with Prompts to ask guiding questions.
  • Invite a volunteer to come up and describe what they see.
  • Differentiation: Exaggerate expressions for visual learners; keep verbal labels simple for auditory learners.

Step 3

Student Mimic & Label

7 minutes

  • Distribute mirrors so each child can see their own face clearly.
  • Call out an emotion and show the matching slide.
  • Students make the face in their mirror and say, “I feel ___.”
  • Offer sentence frames for children needing support: "I feel ___ when..."
  • Differentiation: Provide one-on-one support for shy or less confident students.

Step 4

Partner Check-In

7 minutes

  • Pair students and have each take turns making one of the four faces.
  • The partner uses their mirror to observe and labels the emotion aloud.
  • Circulate to offer prompts and positive reinforcement.
  • Differentiation: For pairs finding it hard, reduce choices to two emotions or model turn-taking first.

Step 5

Reflection Discussion

6 minutes

  • Reconvene in a circle and prompt: “When did you feel happy/sad/mad/scared today?”
  • Allow a few students to share their experiences.
  • Hand out the Draw Your Feeling Sheet and ask children to draw a time they felt one of the emotions.
  • Close by reviewing each emotion together, using mirrors one last time.
  • Differentiation: Offer verbal description in place of drawing for students who prefer speaking.

Slide Deck

Feelings Faces Mirror Game

Let’s explore how our faces show feelings: happy, sad, mad, and scared!

Welcome students to the Feelings Faces Mirror Game. Explain that today we will learn four feelings and practice making faces in our mirrors. Use an enthusiastic tone.

Happy

😊

Point to the happy face on screen. Hold up your mirror and model a big smile. Ask: “How does your face look when you feel happy?” Encourage children to say “happy” and mimic your expression.

Sad

😢

Show the sad face illustration. Demonstrate a sad expression—droopy mouth, downward eyebrows—in your mirror. Invite students to copy you and say, “I feel sad.”

Mad

😡

Display the mad face. Model a mad expression—furrowed brows, tight lips—in your mirror. Ask children to practice the mad face and label it “mad.”

Scared

😨

Reveal the scared face. Show a scared expression—wide eyes, open mouth—in your mirror. Encourage children to mirror you and say, “I feel scared.”

Script

Teacher Script with Prompts {#teacher-script-with-prompts}

Warm-Up Song (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Okay, friends! Let’s all sit in a circle. Today we’re going to sing ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It,’ but we’ll also show other feelings. Ready to sing and move with me?"

(Lead children in adapted song verses, demonstrating each action.)

Teacher (singing):
“If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands! (clap clap)
If you’re sad and you know it, cry boo-hoo! (make crying face)
If you’re mad and you know it, stomp your feet! (stomp stomp)
If you’re scared and you know it, shake like this!” (shake)

Teacher: "Fantastic job! Let me ask you—when we clapped our hands, what feeling did we show?"
(Pause for responses.)
Follow-up: "Yes, happy! Show me your best happy face!"

“What about the crying face—what feeling was that?”
“Great—sad! Give me a sad face.”

Teacher Modeling (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Now let’s look at our screen for our first feeling."
(Advance to the Happy slide on the Feelings Faces Slides.)

Teacher: "I have my mirror from our Handheld Mirrors Set. Watch me: my eyebrows are relaxed, and my mouth turns up into a big smile. This is our happy face."
(Hold mirror and model.)

Teacher: "What do you notice on my face? What feeling am I showing?"
(Pause for answers.)
Follow-up: "Exactly—happy! When you’re happy, you might smile wide and your eyes might sparkle."

Teacher: "Who would like to come up and show us a happy face in the mirror?"
(Invite a volunteer. Prompt: “Tell us what you see on your face.”)

Teacher: "Now let’s see our next feeling."
(Advance to Sad slide.)

Teacher: "Watch me: eyebrows go down, mouth turns down—this is sad."
(Model sad.)
Teacher: "How do we know this face is sad?"
(Pause.)
Follow-up: "Yes—frowning and droopy eyebrows mean sad. Who can show us a sad face?"
(Volunteer models.)

Teacher: "Next up is Mad."
(Advance slide.)

Teacher: "I furrow my brows, press my lips tight—that’s mad."
(Model.)
Teacher: "Can you make a mad face? What do you notice?"
(Students respond and model.)

Teacher: "Finally, let’s look at Scared."
(Advance slide.)

Teacher: "My eyes open big, my mouth opens a bit—this is scared."
(Model.)
Teacher: "What feeling is this? Show me your scared face!"
(Students respond.)

Student Mimic & Label (7 minutes)

Teacher: "Great watching you, friends! Now it’s your turn. Here are your mirrors."
(Distribute Handheld Mirrors Set.)

Teacher: "When I show a feeling on the screen, look in your mirror, make the face, and say, ‘I feel ___!’ Ready?"

  1. (Click Happy slide.)
Teacher & Students: “I feel happy!”
    Teacher: “I feel happy when…”
    Sentence frame:
    • “I feel happy when I __________.”

  2. (Click Sad slide.)
Teacher & Students: “I feel sad!”
    Sentence frame:
    • “I feel sad when I __________.”

  3. (Click Mad slide.)
Teacher & Students: “I feel mad!”
    Sentence frame:
    • “I feel mad when I __________.”

  4. (Click Scared slide.)
Teacher & Students: “I feel scared!”
    Sentence frame:
    • “I feel scared when I __________.”

Encourage volunteers to finish each sentence. Offer one-on-one support as needed.

Partner Check-In (7 minutes)

Teacher: "Now, please find your partner. Partner A will show one of our four faces, and Partner B will guess using a full sentence."

Teacher (modeling):
“Partner A, show me the mad face.”
Partner A makes face.
“Partner B, say: ‘I see you feel mad because __________.’”

Teacher:
• “I see you feel mad because your eyebrows are together and your lips are tight.”

Teacher: "Great job! Now switch roles—and remember to use your mirrors to help you see each face clearly."

Circulate to prompt: “Can you show a little bigger?” or “Tell me more about that face.”

Reflection Discussion & Drawing (6 minutes)

Teacher: "Let’s sit back in our circle. We learned four feelings today. Can anyone tell me when you felt scared today?"
(Pause and allow 2–3 students to share.)
Follow-up: “Thanks for sharing! You said, ‘I felt scared when ______.’"

Teacher: "Now I’m handing out your Draw Your Feeling Sheet. On this paper, draw a time you felt one of these feelings. Show the face you made and maybe what was happening."

Teacher: "Wow—I can’t wait to see your drawings!"

Closing

Teacher: "Before we go, let’s use our mirrors one more time and show each feeling together. Ready? Happy! (smile) Sad! Mad! Scared!

You all did a wonderful job exploring feelings today. Great work, everyone!"
