Lesson Plan

Resilience Role-Play Plan

Students will be able to identify personal strengths, apply problem-solving strategies to challenging situations, and understand the importance of resilience.

This lesson is important because it equips students with practical tools to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs, fostering emotional strength and independence.

Audience

6th Grade Class

Time

50 minutes

Approach

Interactive role-play scenarios.

Materials

Problem-Solvers Slides, Scenario Stations, Resilience Pledge, Markers or pens, and Whiteboard or chart paper

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review all generated materials including the Problem-Solvers Slides, Scenario Stations, and Resilience Pledge.
  • Print out the Scenario Stations and cut them into individual scenario cards (one set per small group).
  • Prepare a space in the classroom that allows for small group work and easy movement for role-playing.

Step 1

Warm-up & Introduction

10 minutes

  1. Hook (5 minutes): Begin by asking students: "Has anyone ever felt 'stuck' in a situation and didn't know what to do? Maybe it was a tough homework problem, a disagreement with a friend, or something else. Share an example (without naming names if it involves others)." Use Problem-Solvers Slides (Slide 1 & 2).
  2. Introduce the Lesson (5 minutes): Explain that today's lesson will help them learn how to get "unstuck" by building resilience and practicing problem-solving. Introduce the lesson's objectives.

Step 2

Defining Resilience & Problem-Solving

10 minutes

  1. What is Resilience? (5 minutes): Use Problem-Solvers Slides (Slide 3) to guide a discussion on resilience. Ask students for their definitions and examples. Emphasize that it's about bouncing back and adapting.
  2. What is Problem-Solving? (5 minutes): Transition to problem-solving using Problem-Solvers Slides (Slide 4). Discuss the basic steps: identifying the problem, brainstorming solutions, choosing a solution, and reflecting.

Step 3

Scenario Stations Activity

20 minutes

  1. Explain the Activity (5 minutes): Introduce the Scenario Stations activity. Divide students into small groups (3-4 students per group). Explain that each group will receive a scenario and will need to role-play how they would demonstrate resilience and problem-solving. Use Problem-Solvers Slides (Slide 5) for instructions.
  2. Group Role-Play (15 minutes): Distribute one scenario card from Scenario Stations to each group. Instruct groups to read their scenario, discuss possible solutions, and then act out their chosen solution, focusing on resilient behaviors and problem-solving steps. Encourage creative and thoughtful responses. Circulate to provide support and ask guiding questions.

Step 4

Group Share & Discussion

5 minutes

  1. Share Out (5 minutes): Bring the class back together. Have each group briefly share their scenario and the resilient/problem-solving approach they role-played. Use Problem-Solvers Slides (Slide 6) to prompt discussion. Encourage students to identify common themes and effective strategies.

Step 5

Resilience Pledge & Wrap-up

5 minutes

  1. Resilience Pledge (3 minutes): Distribute the Resilience Pledge to each student. Read it aloud together as a class. Encourage students to commit to practicing resilience and problem-solving.
  2. Reflection & Closing (2 minutes): Ask students to reflect on one new strategy they learned today. Reiterate the importance of these skills in their daily lives. Use Problem-Solvers Slides (Slide 7).

Feeling Stuck? Become a Problem-Solver!

Ever felt like you're in a tricky spot and don't know what to do?

Today, we're learning how to get "unstuck"!

Greet students and start with the hook question. Encourage sharing, but remind them about privacy. Transition to the lesson's purpose.

What is Resilience?

• It's like a superpower that helps you bounce back!
• It's adapting and growing after facing tough times.
• It's not about never falling, but about getting back up.

Prompt students for their own definitions and examples of resilience. Emphasize it's about bouncing back from challenges.

What is Problem-Solving?

• It's finding ways to fix challenges.
• It's a step-by-step approach to overcome obstacles.
• It's a skill you can practice and get better at!

Discuss the idea of breaking down problems. Introduce the basic steps of problem-solving.

The Resilience Cycle

  1. Identify: What's the problem or challenge?
  2. Brainstorm: What are some ideas to solve it?
  3. Act: Choose an idea and try it!
  4. Reflect: What worked? What could be better next time?

Explain the Resilience Cycle. This is a simplified version of the problem-solving steps.

Scenario Stations: Your Challenge!

• In your groups, you'll get a real-life scenario.
• Read it carefully and discuss how the characters might feel.
• Work together to brainstorm solutions using the Resilience Cycle.
• Role-Play your solution! Show how you'd be resilient and solve the problem.

Clearly explain the Scenario Stations activity. Ensure students understand they need to role-play applying resilience and problem-solving.

Time to Share!

• What was your scenario?
• How did your characters show resilience?
• What problem-solving steps did you use?

Guide the share-out session. Ask groups to briefly summarize their scenario and solution.

Our Resilience Pledge

I promise to face challenges with courage,
To learn from every setback, big or small.
I will use my problem-solving skills,
And remember that I can always bounce back.
I am resilient!

Lead the class in reading the pledge. Encourage a moment of personal reflection.

Activity

Scenario Stations

Instructions: In your groups, read your assigned scenario. Discuss how the characters might feel and what problem-solving steps they could take. Then, role-play your chosen solution, demonstrating resilience and effective problem-solving. Be prepared to share your scenario and solution with the class!

Scenario 1: The Group Project Goof-Up

You and two classmates are working on a big presentation for science. It's due tomorrow, and you thought everything was going well. But when you meet up, you discover that one group member completely forgot to do their part, and the other person's section is missing key information. You feel frustrated and worried about your grade.

Challenge: How do you handle the missing work and ensure your group still turns in a good project on time, while also managing your frustration?

Scenario 2: The Friend Trouble

Your best friend has been acting distant and a little mean lately. They've been spending more time with a new group of friends and ignoring you during lunch. You feel hurt and confused, and you miss your old friendship. You're not sure if you should say something or just try to ignore it.

Challenge: How do you address the change in your friendship and try to understand what's happening, without letting your feelings get the best of you?

Scenario 3: The Online Game Frustration

You're playing your favorite online game with friends, but you keep losing. Every time you get close to winning, something goes wrong, and you get defeated. You're starting to get really angry and want to just quit. Your friends are getting annoyed because you keep complaining and want to try another game.

Challenge: How do you deal with your frustration and decide whether to keep playing, take a break, or try a different approach, all while keeping your friends happy?

Scenario 4: The Unexpected Homework

You had plans to hang out with friends after school, but then your teacher suddenly assigns a pop quiz for tomorrow and a difficult essay that night. You completely forgot about the essay, and now you have both due. You feel overwhelmed and like there's no way you can do everything.

Challenge: How do you manage your time and emotions to tackle the unexpected workload and still find a way to relax or enjoy some time with friends?

Cool Down

My Resilience Pledge

I, (Your Name), pledge to cultivate resilience in my daily life. I understand that challenges are a part of growing, and I promise to:

  1. Face difficulties with courage: I will not give up easily when things get tough.

  2. Learn from my setbacks: I will see mistakes as opportunities to grow and improve, not as failures.

  3. Use my problem-solving skills: I will think creatively and try different solutions when I feel stuck.

  4. Ask for help when I need it: I know I don't have to face everything alone.

  5. Believe in my ability to bounce back: I am strong, adaptable, and capable of overcoming obstacles.

Today, I commit to being a problem-solver and a resilient individual!
