Answer Key

Possessive Practice Key

Below are the correct possessive adjectives for each sentence, along with the reasoning for choosing each form.

  1. ma sœur (my sister) s’appelle Sophie.
    • Reasoning: “Sœur” is feminine singular. For “my” (je) + feminine singular → ma.
  2. tes grands-parents (your grandparents – fam.) habitent à Paris.
    • Reasoning: “Grands-parents” is plural. For “your” (tu, familiar) + plural → tes.
  3. Pierre adore son nouveau chien.
    • Reasoning: “Chien” is masculine singular. For “his/her” (il/elle) + masculine singular → son.
  4. Nous aimons notre professeure de français.
    • Reasoning: “Professeure” is feminine singular, but for nous + singular (m. or f.) → notre.
  5. Vous avez vos devoirs ?
    • Reasoning: “Devoirs” is plural. For “your” (vous) + plural → vos.
  6. Elles ont perdu leurs clés.
    • Reasoning: “Clés” is plural. For “their” (ils/elles) + plural → leurs.

Tips:

  • Always match the possessive adjective to the gender and number of the noun that follows.
  • Remember special rule: before a vowel or mute h, use masc. form (e.g., mon amie).
  • When in doubt, first identify the subject (je, tu, il/elle, nous, vous, ils/elles), then check if the noun is sing./plur. and masc./fem.
