Slide Deck

Express Yourself: Emotions PECS

Welcome! Today we will learn how to express our emotions using a PECS board. Let's get started.

Welcome the students, introduce yourself, and share the lesson's goal for today. Emphasize that this is a fun way to learn about emotions and how to express them using the PECS board.

What Are Emotions?

Emotions are feelings that we experience every day. They can be happy, sad, angry, or excited. Let's explore these feelings together!

Explain the concept of emotions in simple terms. Ask students to share a time they felt happy, sad, or excited to connect with the topic.

Meet the PECS Board

This board helps us show how we're feeling. Each image on the board represents a different emotion. (Refer to Emotions PECS Board Visuals)

Share examples of the PECS board visuals. Ensure that the digital projection is working and the visuals are clear. Engage with students by asking what each image might represent.

Guided Practice

Let's practice using the board! Everyone take turns selecting an emotion card and sharing which emotion you picked and why.

Demonstrate how to use the board. Encourage individual participation by having students point to an emotion card that they feel matches their current mood. Walk around and assist as needed.

Wrap-Up & Reflection

Great job today! Let's think about how expressing our emotions helps us communicate better. What did you learn about your feelings?

Wrap up the lesson by summarizing what was learned. Ask reflective questions to ensure students understand why expressing emotions is important. Give positive feedback.

Activity

Emotion Card Matching Activity

This activity is designed to reinforce your understanding of various emotions and to help you practice using the PECS board by matching emotion cards with corresponding facial expressions or scenarios. The focus is on both recognizing and expressing feelings.

Activity Guidelines

  1. Objective:

    • Match each emotion card with its appropriate facial expression or scenario description.
    • Use the PECS board to discuss how each emotion might be expressed or felt.
  2. Materials Needed:

    • Printed emotion cards with clear images and labels (happy, sad, angry, surprised, etc.).
    • A set of scenario cards that describe simple situations (e.g., "Your best friend gave you a gift", "It started raining during your picnic", etc.).
    • Emotions PECS Board Visuals for additional reference.
  3. Instructions:

    • Step 1: Lay out the printed emotion cards on a table or board.
    • Step 2: Separately, place the scenario cards facedown.
    • Step 3: One at a time, students will flip a scenario card and read it aloud (or have the teacher read it aloud if needed).
    • Step 4: Ask the student (or students) to choose the emotion card that best matches the scenario. Then, using the PECS board, they will point to that emotion.
    • Step 5: Discuss why the chosen emotion is appropriate for the scenario. Encourage students to make connections with their own experiences.
  4. Group Work Option:

    • Arrange students in small groups and have them work together to match cards, allowing for collaboration and discussion about how different situations might make someone feel.

Questions for Student Reflection

  • What emotion did you choose for this scenario and why?

  • Can you think of another time when you felt this way? How did you express it?

  • How do you think using the PECS board helps you share your feelings?

Follow-Up Activities and Points for Discussion

  • Discuss: How can being able to identify and express your emotions help you in difficult situations?
  • Extend: Think of a time when you saw someone else feeling a particular emotion. How might you help them express or communicate their feelings?
  • Practice: Encourage students to use the PECS board in real-time for a few minutes at the end of the session, selecting an emotion card that represents how they feel at that moment.

This activity not only helps build your vocabulary of emotions but also reinforces the connection between what you see in others’ expressions and what you may feel inside. Enjoy the matching, share your thoughts, and express yourself!

Good luck, and have fun exploring emotions!
