Executive Edge Kickoff Lesson Plan
Students will identify their start-of-year fears, assess personal executive functioning strengths and weaknesses, and craft an actionable roadmap with goals and strategies to improve time management, organization, and focus.
Building self-awareness around challenges and strengths empowers students to proactively manage executive functions, reducing stress and boosting academic success throughout the year.

- Print copies of the following materials: Fear Mapping Template, Strengths & Weaknesses Grid, and Action Roadmap Worksheet.
- Review the Executive Edge Kickoff Lesson Plan and familiarize yourself with each activity's instructions and materials.
Step 1
Fear Mapping
10 minutes
- Introduce the concept of start-of-year fears and explain why identifying them builds self-awareness.
- Distribute the Fear Mapping Template to each student.
- Instruct students to list 5–7 fears or concerns related to school (e.g., time management, workload, social dynamics).
- Ask students to prioritize by circling their top three fears.
Step 2
Strengths & Weaknesses Grid
10 minutes
- Explain that understanding strengths and weaknesses in executive functioning supports targeted growth.
- Hand out the Strengths & Weaknesses Grid.
- Have students list 3–4 strengths and 3–4 challenges across categories (organization, focus, planning).
- Pair students to share one strength and one weakness and offer a brief peer suggestion.
Step 3
Action Roadmap
10 minutes
- Introduce the Action Roadmap Worksheet to translate insights into goals.
- Ask students to select one key weakness and brainstorm 2–3 strategies to address it (e.g., using a planner, setting timers).
- Have students write a SMART goal, one strategy, and an accountability partner on the worksheet.
- Invite volunteers to share their roadmap steps with the class for feedback.

Building Self-Awareness & Executive Functioning Strengths
Welcome students and introduce the lesson’s purpose: building self-awareness around start-of-year fears and executive functioning skills.
Lesson Objectives
- Identify your top 3 start-of-year fears
- Assess executive functioning strengths and challenges
- Craft an Action Roadmap with SMART goals and strategies
Read the objectives aloud and clarify any questions. Emphasize that today’s work will guide goal-setting throughout the year.
Activity 1: Fear Mapping
Time: 10 minutes
- List 5–7 school-related fears
- Circle your top 3 and write them out
- Plot each on the “Mildly” to “Extremely Concerning” spectrum

Distribute the Fear Mapping Template. Guide students through Parts 1–3 over 10 minutes.
Activity 2: Strengths & Weaknesses
Time: 10 minutes
- List 3–4 strengths and challenges in:

Activity 3: Action Roadmap

- Choose one key weakness
- Brainstorm 2–3 strategies
- Write a SMART goal and select an accountability partner
- Outline checkpoints and success criteria

Introduce SMART goals framework and circulate to support students. Allow 10 minutes.
