Emotion Superheroes Plan

Students will become 'Emotion Superheroes' by practicing deep breathing, movement breaks, and calm-down strategies to recognize and manage big feelings.

Early self-regulation skills help Pre-K learners identify emotions, reduce classroom disruptions, and build lifelong coping strategies in a fun, supportive environment.

Step 1

Introduction to Emotion Superheroes

5 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle.
  • Show Emotion Faces Cards and ask children to name each emotion.
  • Explain that they are all Emotion Superheroes who can use special skills to manage big feelings.

Step 2

Deep Breathing Practice

5 minutes

  • Display Deep Breathing Visuals.
  • Demonstrate 'Superhero Breath': inhale slowly through the nose for 3 counts, then exhale through the mouth for 3 counts.
  • Practice the Superhero Breath together three times.

Step 3

Movement Break

5 minutes

  • Play the Movement Break Song.
  • Invite students to move like superheroes—jumping, flying arms, and stretching.
  • Encourage big, energetic movements to help release excess energy.

Step 4

Calm-Down Strategy Demo

10 minutes

  • Lead students to the Calm-Down Corner mat.
  • Show the Calm-Down Jar Demo Video or demonstrate a glitter jar in person.
  • Shake the jar and watch the glitter swirl, explaining how watching it can help calm our minds.
  • Introduce additional strategies: counting to five, gentle hugs with a soft toy, or quiet breathing.

Reflect and Close

5 minutes

  • Invite students back to the circle for one final superhero pose.
  • Ask volunteers to share which superhero skill they liked best today.
  • Distribute Emotion Superheroes Coloring Sheet for independent practice recognizing and coloring different emotions.

Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself as today’s guide on becoming Emotion Superheroes. Explain that we’ll learn fun skills to manage big feelings.

Our Superpower: Feeling Awareness

Being aware of our feelings makes us strong!

Hold up the Emotion Faces Cards. Point to each and ask volunteers to name the emotion. Reinforce that naming feelings is our first superpower.

Superhero Breath

Let’s practice ‘Superhero Breath’:

  1. Inhale through your nose for 3 seconds
  2. Exhale through your mouth for 3 seconds

Follow the Deep Breathing Visuals!

Display the Deep Breathing Visuals on your board or handouts. Demonstrate inhale–hold–exhale with counts. Count out loud together.

Move like a superhero! Jump, stretch, fly—let’s shake out our energy.

Cue up the Movement Break Song. Encourage energetic superhero poses—flying, jumping, stretching. Model big movements first.

Watch the glitter swirl… counting helps us feel calm and ready.

Gather students in the Calm-Down Corner. Show the Calm-Down Jar Demo Video or shake your glitter jar. Explain how watching the glitter helps calm our minds.
