College Quest Lesson Plan

Students will learn what college is, explore various careers, understand why people attend college, and creatively envision their own future dreams.

Introducing college and career concepts early builds curiosity, goal-setting skills, and lays a foundation for lifelong readiness in a playful, age-appropriate way.

Prep

Review And Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Download and review College Quest Slide Deck to familiarize yourself with visuals and talking points.
  • Print one copy of the Dream Cloud Worksheet per student.
  • Gather crayons or markers and arrange career picture cards for display.
  • Ensure seating is arranged for whole-group viewing of slides.

Step 1

Welcome And Define College

5 minutes

  • Display Slide 1: Colorful title slide and college building image.
  • Ask: “Has anyone heard of college? What do you think happens there?”
  • Explain: College is a place people go to learn more after school, meet new friends, and study jobs they love.
  • Use simple language and point to visuals for students with language needs.

Step 2

Explore Careers

5 minutes

  • Display Slides 2–4: Show pictures of different careers (e.g., teacher, doctor, artist).
  • Hold up corresponding Career Picture Cards and ask volunteers to name each job.
  • Discuss: “What sounds fun about this job?”
  • Offer sentence starters for students who need extra support (IEPs/504s): “I like being a ______ because _____.”

Step 3

Why Go To College?

5 minutes

  • Display Slide 5: Question “Why do people go to college?” with icons (books, lab, art tools).
  • Invite students to share ideas: “To learn new things,” “To become a doctor,” etc.
  • Confirm and add reasons: to practice skills, discover talents, and prepare for careers.
  • Provide visuals alongside speech for ELLs.

Step 4

Draw Your Dream

5 minutes

  • Hand out the Dream Cloud Worksheet.
  • Prompt: “Draw what job you’d like to do when you grow up!”
  • Encourage use of bright colors; circulate to support fine motor or idea generation.
  • Allow students to share their drawings in a quick gallery walk for positive peer feedback.

Welcome students! Today we’re going on a “College Quest.” Point to the college building illustration. Ask: “Has anyone heard of college? What do you think happens there?” Use simple language and encourage answers, then explain that college is a place people go after high school to learn more and make friends.

What Is College?

A school people go to after high school to learn new things and make friends.

Introduce the idea of college. Read the definition aloud: “A school people go to after high school to learn new things and make friends.” Point to each phrase as you say it. Show enthusiasm and use visuals to support understanding, especially for ELLs.

Explore Careers

Teachers 👩‍🏫 Doctors 🩺 Artists 🎨

Show each career icon and name it: teacher, doctor, artist. Ask volunteers: “Who knows what this person does?” Use the career picture cards as a visual aid. Encourage sentence starters: “I like being a teacher because…”
