Gratitude Mural Lesson Plan
Students will collaboratively design and create a classroom gratitude mural over two sessions, expressing things they appreciate through art to foster teamwork, reflection, and gratitude.

Prep
Setup And Preparation

- Review the Collaborative Gratitude Mural Slide Deck to familiarize yourself with slides and talking points.
- Print and cut out the Gratitude Group Roles Cards for each group member.
- Print enough copies of the Gratitude Reflection Prompts for every student.
- Cover tables or the floor with newspaper or a drop cloth to protect surfaces.
- Secure the butcher paper to a chosen wall or board at student height.
- Arrange paints, brushes, markers, scissors, glue, and collage materials at art stations.
- Place aprons or smocks on a nearby table for students to wear.
Step 1
Session 1: Brainstorm And Planning
45 minutes
- Welcome students and lead a brief discussion: “What does gratitude mean to you?”
- Display slides 1–3 of the Collaborative Gratitude Mural Slide Deck to introduce the project goals and timeline.
- Distribute the Gratitude Reflection Prompts; allow 10 minutes for individual written responses.
- Invite students to share their reflections in small groups (4–5 students each).
- Assign each group member a role (e.g., Sketcher, Color Lead, Collage Coordinator, Calligrapher) using the Gratitude Group Roles Cards.
- Provide scrap paper and have groups sketch their mural concepts, focusing on symbols or words representing gratitude.
- Collect sketches and remind students to bring ideas back for painting next session.
Step 2
Session 2: Mural Creation And Reflection
45 minutes
- Begin with a 5-minute review of group roles and brainstormed ideas.
- Have groups transfer their sketches onto the butcher paper with light pencil outlines.
- Distribute paints, markers, collage supplies, and calligraphy pens; students execute the mural in their assigned roles.
- Circulate to support collaboration, encourage idea-sharing, and maintain focus on gratitude themes.
- Once artwork is complete, lead a gallery walk: groups rotate to view each other’s work and discuss favorite elements.
- Give each student a sticky note to write a one-word gratitude note and place it along the mural border.
- Conclude with clean-up: guide students to return art supplies, remove smocks, and leave the space tidy.

Gratitude Group Roles Cards
Purpose: Each student takes on one of these roles to help your group plan and create the gratitude mural. Print one card per student, cut along the lines, and distribute at the start of Session 1.
Sketcher
• Role: Draw the light pencil outlines of your group’s mural design on scrap paper and later on the butcher paper.
• Responsibilities:
- Translate your group’s ideas into simple shapes and symbols.
- Keep sketches clear so classmates can add color and collage.
- Erase gently and adjust outlines as needed.
Color Lead
• Role: Choose and apply paints or markers to bring your mural to life.
• Responsibilities:

- Coordinate with the Sketcher to stay within the lines.
- Mix paint carefully and clean brushes when switching colors.
