Classroom Superheroes!

Ready to discover your superpower for a super classroom?

Welcome students and introduce the exciting theme of 'Classroom Superheroes.' Ask them to think about what a superhero does to help their community (our classroom!).

What Makes a GREAT Classroom?

Think about it:

  • What does it look like?
  • What does it sound like?
  • How does it feel to be there?

Engage students with a quick question to activate prior knowledge and set the stage for positive behavior. Allow 1-2 students to share briefly.

Meet Our Classroom Superheroes!

We all have superpowers to help our classroom!

Today we'll meet three special heroes:

  • The Distraction Destroyer!
  • The Quiet Contributor!
  • The Stay-in-Place Power!

Introduce the three 'superhero' categories for classroom behavior. Emphasize that these are ways we can choose to be helpful.

The Distraction Destroyer!

This hero helps stop things that stop our learning.

What does it look like?

  • Calling out during lessons
  • Wandering around when it's quiet work time
  • Making loud noises

Superhero Strategy: Think before you act! Is this helping or hurting our learning? Use your inside voice and body!

Discuss disruptive behavior. Provide clear examples and explain the impact on others. Emphasize that we can control our actions even when we have big feelings.

The Quiet Contributor!

This hero helps everyone share their ideas, even if they're shy!

What does it look like?

  • Sometimes feeling too shy to share
  • Keeping great ideas to yourself

Superhero Strategy: Find your voice! You can raise a quiet hand, share with a partner, or write your ideas down. Your ideas matter!

Address quiet/shy behavior. Acknowledge that it's okay to be quiet, but encourage participation. Explain how a 'Quiet Contributor' finds ways to share.

The Stay-in-Place Power!

This hero helps us stay where we need to be to learn and be safe.

What does it look like?

  • Leaving your seat without asking
  • Walking away from the group
  • Running in the classroom

Superhero Strategy: Ask first! If you need to move, ask your teacher for permission. Our classroom has special spots for a reason!

Discuss eloping behavior. Explain the importance of staying in designated areas and asking for permission. Focus on safety and respect for routines.

Be a Classroom Superhero!

Every one of you has the power to make our classroom the best place to learn.

Choose your superpower today:

  • Be a Distraction Destroyer!
  • Be a Quiet Contributor!
  • Be a Stay-in-Place Power!

Summarize the key takeaway: we all contribute to a super classroom by making good choices. Reiterate that everyone can be a superhero.

Script

Classroom Superheroes! Script

Introduction (Warm-Up)

"Good morning, future superheroes! Today, we're going to talk about how we can all use our amazing powers to make our classroom the very best place to learn and have fun. First, let's think: What does a fantastic classroom look, sound, and feel like? Close your eyes for a moment and imagine it... What do you see? What do you hear? How do you feel being in that classroom?"

"[Allow 1-2 students to share their ideas briefly, e.g., 'Everyone is listening,' 'It feels safe and happy,' 'We're all learning.'] That's right! A super classroom is a place where everyone feels safe, respected, and ready to learn. Today, we'll discover how we can all be 'Classroom Superheroes' every single day!"

Meet Our Superheroes! (Slide Deck - Slides 1-3)

"[Transition to Classroom Superheroes! Slide Deck - Slide 1] Look at our exciting title slide! We are all Classroom Superheroes!"

"[Slide 2: What Makes a GREAT Classroom?] We just talked about this, didn't we? It's where we can all focus, share, and feel good. But sometimes, even superheroes have challenges, right? We're going to talk about some common classroom challenges and how we can use our superpowers to overcome them."

"[Slide 3: Meet Our Classroom Superheroes!] Today, we'll meet three special types of superheroes. Each one helps us make great choices. Ready?"

The Distraction Destroyer! (Slide 4)

"[Slide 4: The Distraction Destroyer!] Our first hero is the 'Distraction Destroyer!' Can you guess what kind of problems this hero solves?"

"Exactly! They help us destroy distractions! What does 'disruptive' mean to you? It means doing things that make it hard for others to learn or for the teacher to teach. Like calling out without raising a hand, or making noises when others are trying to focus. Why do you think someone might be a Distraction Destroyer by accident?"

"Yes, maybe they're excited, or they forgot the rules. But a true Distraction Destroyer superhero thinks before they act! They use their inside voice and body. They ask themselves: 'Is what I'm doing right now helping our learning?'"

The Quiet Contributor! (Slide 5)

"[Slide 5: The Quiet Contributor!] Next up is the 'Quiet Contributor!' This hero helps make sure everyone's ideas are heard. Sometimes, we have brilliant ideas in our heads, but we feel too shy or nervous to share them out loud. Has anyone ever felt like that?"

"It's totally normal! But a Quiet Contributor superhero knows that their ideas matter. They find ways to share. What are some ways you can share your ideas if you're feeling a bit quiet?"

"Great ideas! You can raise a quiet hand, whisper to a partner, or even write your ideas down and show them to me later. Your voice, in whatever way you choose to share it, makes our classroom stronger!"

The Stay-in-Place Power! (Slide 6)

"[Slide 6: The Stay-in-Place Power!] Our last hero for today is the 'Stay-in-Place Power!' This hero is all about keeping us safe and in the right spot to learn. What do you think 'eloping' means in a classroom?"

"It means leaving your spot or walking away from the group without asking permission. Why is it important to stay in our assigned places or ask before we move?"

"Safety! And also, so we don't miss important information or distract others. A Stay-in-Place Power superhero always asks first if they need to move. They know our classroom has special spots for a reason, and they respect those boundaries."

Be a Classroom Superhero! (Slide 7)

"[Slide 7: Be a Classroom Superhero!] Amazing! You've met our three classroom superheroes. Remember, every one of you has the power to choose to be a Distraction Destroyer, a Quiet Contributor, or a Stay-in-Place Power. These choices make our classroom a fantastic place to learn!"

Behavior Scenario Worksheet & Discussion

"Now, you get to put on your superhero thinking caps! I'm going to give you a Behavior Scenario Worksheet. On this worksheet, you'll read a short story about a classroom challenge. Your job is to think: What would a 'Classroom Superhero' do in this situation? Take about 2-3 minutes to write down your ideas. Then, we'll talk about them together."

"[After 2-3 minutes] Alright, my brilliant superheroes! Let's share some of our ideas. I'll use our Classroom Behavior Discussion Prompts to guide us. Who would like to share what a superhero would do in scenario #1?"

Team Up for Terrific Choices Activity

"You all had such fantastic ideas! Now for our next mission: We're going to think of one 'superhero choice' we can personally make today or this week. For example, if I sometimes forget to raise my hand when I'm super excited, my superhero choice might be to take a deep breath and raise my hand before I speak. What's one superhero choice you can make to help our classroom? Turn and talk to a partner and share your idea!"

"[Allow students to share with partners for about a minute, then ask for a few volunteers to share with the class.] Excellent! Remember these superhero choices!"

Cool Down: My Superhero Pledge

"Fantastic work today, Classroom Superheroes! To wrap up our mission, I want each of you to make a special pledge. I'm handing out this Cool Down: My Superhero Pledge. On it, you'll write down one thing you promise to do to be a 'Classroom Superhero.' It can be about destroying distractions, contributing your quiet ideas, or staying in your spot. When you're done, turn it in to me. This will be your secret superhero promise!"

"Great job everyone! You are all amazing Classroom Superheroes!"

Discussion

Classroom Behavior Discussion Prompts

Directions: Use these prompts to facilitate a class discussion after students complete the Behavior Scenario Worksheet.

Discussion for Scenario 1: The Wobbly Walker

  • "In Scenario 1, the friend kept moving around during quiet reading time. What did your Classroom Superhero say about what to do?"
  • "Why is it important to stay in our seats during quiet work? How does it help everyone focus?"
  • "What could the friend do before getting up if they really needed something, like a new pencil?"

Discussion for Scenario 2: The Silent Superstar

  • "In Scenario 2, you had a great idea but felt shy. What would a Classroom Superhero do to share their ideas, even if they're quiet?"
  • "Why is it important for everyone to share their thoughts, even if it's in a small way? What do we learn from each other?"
  • "What are some different ways we can show our ideas without always speaking out loud?"

Discussion for Scenario 3: The Speedy Spreader

  • "In Scenario 3, you wanted to see your friend's drawing right away. What would a Stay-in-Place Power Superhero do instead of just running over?"
  • "Why do we have rules about where we can go and when in the classroom? How does it keep us safe and organized?"
  • "If you really wanted to see your friend's drawing, what could be a superhero way to do it?"

General Reflection Prompts

  • "Think about all the scenarios. How do our choices impact our friends and our teacher?"
  • "What does it feel like to be in a classroom where everyone is being a superhero?"
  • "What is one easy way you can be a Classroom Superhero this week?"
