Reading

Hispanic Heritage Month Reading

A short reading handout providing an overview of Hispanic Heritage Month and its significance.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States. This period honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988.

The date of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

During this month, various events and educational activities take place to celebrate the diverse cultures and rich history of the Hispanic community. It is a time to recognize the important contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, such as advancements in arts, sciences, literature, and politics.
