Welcome, Stop-and-Think Superheroes!

Are you ready to discover your inner superhero powers?

Today, we're going to learn about a super important power: Impulse Control!

It helps us make good choices and be awesome friends!

Welcome students and ask them what they think a superhero does. Connect it to making good choices and helping others. Explain that today, they will learn to be 'Stop-and-Think Superheroes.'

What is Impulse Control?

It's like having a superpower that helps you PAUSE before you ACT!

When you feel like doing something quickly without thinking, your superpower helps you:

  • STOP!
  • THINK!
  • Then, CHOOSE!

Explain impulse control in simple terms. Give examples like wanting to blurt out an answer or grab a toy, but instead, they pause. Use the image of a 'thought bubble' and a 'stop sign.'

Superhero Power-Up #1: The Stop Sign Breath

When you feel a strong urge to do something without thinking:

  1. Imagine a Stop Sign in your mind.
  2. Take a deep, superhero breath (in through your nose, out through your mouth).
  3. Count to three slowly in your head.

This gives your brain time to catch up!

Introduce the first strategy: the 'Superhero Stop Sign.' Emphasize taking a deep breath and counting. Demonstrate with students.

Superhero Power-Up #2: Think First!

Before you speak or act, ask yourself:

  • Is it Kind? (Will it hurt someone's feelings?)
  • Is it Safe? (Could someone get hurt?)
  • Is it Respectful? (Am I showing good manners?)
  • Is it Helpful? (Will it make things better or worse?)

If the answer isn't YES, then STOP and THINK again!

Introduce the second strategy: 'Think Before You Speak/Act.' Give examples relevant to 2nd graders, like blurting out answers or interrupting. Ask students for other examples.

Superhero Power-Up #3: Picture the Outcome

Your superhero brain can predict the future! (A little bit, anyway!)

  • Imagine what might happen if you act on your first impulse.
  • Imagine what might happen if you Stop and Think first.

Which outcome looks better for a superhero?

Introduce the third strategy: 'Picture the Outcome.' Help students visualize consequences in a simple way.

You're Ready for Superhero Action!

You now have amazing Stop-and-Think Superpowers!

Remember: STOP, THINK, CHOOSE!

Let's practice using our new powers with some real-life superhero scenarios!

Summarize the key takeaways and transition to the activity where they will practice these powers.
