Answer Key
Brain Blitz Challenge Answer Key
Round 1: Math Mania!
-
Question: Solve for 'y' in the system of equations: x + y = 10 and 2x - y = 5.
Answer: y = 5
Reasoning:- Add the two equations together to eliminate 'y': (x + y) + (2x - y) = 10 + 5
- 3x = 15
- Divide by 3: x = 5
- Substitute x = 5 into the first equation: 5 + y = 10
- Subtract 5 from both sides: y = 5
-
Question: A car travels at an average speed of 60 mph. How long will it take to travel 210 miles?
Answer: 3.5 hours
Reasoning:- Time = Distance / Speed
- Time = 210 miles / 60 mph
- Time = 3.5 hours
-
Question: What is the probability of rolling an even number on a standard six-sided die, then flipping a coin and getting tails?
Answer: 1/4
Reasoning:- Probability of rolling an even number (2, 4, 6) on a six-sided die is 3/6 = 1/2.
- Probability of flipping a coin and getting tails is 1/2.
- To find the probability of both independent events occurring, multiply their individual probabilities: (1/2) * (1/2) = 1/4.
-
Question: Calculate the volume of a cylinder with a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm (use π ≈ 3.14).
Answer: 282.6 cubic cm
Reasoning:- Volume of a cylinder = π * r² * h
- Volume = 3.14 * (3 cm)² * 10 cm
- Volume = 3.14 * 9 sq cm * 10 cm
- Volume = 28.26 * 10 cubic cm = 282.6 cubic cm
Round 2: ELA Exploration!
-
Question: What literary device is used in the phrase, 'The wind whispered secrets through the trees'?
Answer: Personification
Reasoning: Personification is when human qualities or actions are attributed to inanimate objects or animals. Wind cannot literally whisper. -

Answer: Malicious
Reasoning: 'Benevolent' means well-meaning and kindly. 'Malicious' means characterized by malice; intending or intended to do harm. -
Question: Identify the subject in the following sentence: 'Running quickly, the dog chased the squirrel.'
Answer: Dog
Reasoning: The subject of a sentence is the noun or pronoun that performs the action or is described. In this sentence, the dog is performing the action of chasing. -
Question: What is a synonym for 'ubiquitous'?
Answer: Pervasive or Widespread
Reasoning: 'Ubiquitous' means present, appearing, or found everywhere.
Round 3: Science Surge & Social Studies Spotlight!
-
Question: What is the primary function of mitochondria in a cell?
Answer: To produce energy (ATP) for the cell
Reasoning: Mitochondria are often called the "powerhouses" of the cell because they generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions, stored in adenosine triphosphate (ATP). -
Question: Explain the difference between a physical change and a chemical change, providing an example of each.
Answer: Physical change alters form but not composition (e.g., ice melting). Chemical change alters composition, forming a new substance (e.g., wood burning).
Reasoning: A physical change rearranges molecules but does not alter their internal structure, while a chemical change involves a chemical reaction, leading to the formation of new chemical substances. -
Question: What is the law of conservation of energy?
Answer: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed.
Reasoning: This fundamental principle of physics states that the total energy of an isolated system remains constant; it is said to be conserved over time. -
Question: Which type of rock is formed from the cooling and solidification of molten magma or lava?
Answer: Igneous rock
Reasoning: Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of molten rock, either within the Earth's crust (plutonic or intrusive rocks) or on its surface (volcanic or extrusive rocks). -
Question: What significant event in American history occurred on July 4, 1776?
Answer: Signing of the Declaration of Independence
Reasoning: July 4, 1776, is the date on which the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress, declaring the colonies' independence from Great Britain. -
