Lesson Plan

All About Us Adventure Lesson Plan

Students will engage in fun icebreaker activities to introduce themselves, learn classmates’ names and interests, and collaboratively establish classroom norms to foster a positive learning community.

Building community on day one helps students feel welcomed, valued, and connected, setting the stage for respectful collaboration and a supportive classroom climate all year long.

Materials

Name-Tag Templates, - All About Me Poster Puzzle, - Classroom Norms Chart Template, - Chart Paper, - Sticky Notes, and - Markers and Crayons

Prep

Teacher Preparation

5 minutes

  • Review the Name-Tag Templates and print one per student
  • Prepare and cut the All About Me Poster Puzzle pieces
  • Post a large sheet of chart paper titled “Our Classroom Norms” and have Classroom Norms Chart Template ready
  • Gather markers, crayons, and sticky notes

Step 1

Welcome & Name-Tag Creation

3 minutes

  • Greet students at the door and invite them to pick up a Name-Tag Template
  • Ask students to write their name and draw one favorite thing (sport, food, game)
  • Model yours on the board and encourage creativity

Step 2

All About Me Puzzle

5 minutes

  • Hand each student one piece from the All About Me Poster Puzzle
  • Instruct them to find classmates with adjoining pieces, form small groups, and assemble the puzzle
  • Once complete, each student shares one thing they drew or wrote

Step 3

Brainstorm Classroom Norms

5 minutes

  • Gather students at the chart paper titled “Our Classroom Norms”
  • Prompt: “What rules help us be kind, safe, and ready to learn?”
  • Record each student suggestion on the Classroom Norms Chart Template
  • Read through and agree on 3–5 key norms

Step 4

Closing & Team Cheer

2 minutes

  • Ask each student to share one thing they learned about a peer
  • Lead the class in a quick cheer (e.g., “We are 2nd Grade Superstars!”) to celebrate your new community

Building our 2nd Grade Community

Welcome everyone to our first day adventure! Introduce yourself with a big smile and tell students we’re going to have fun getting to know each other.

Objectives

  • Introduce yourself & learn classmates’ names
  • Share your favorite things
  • Establish our classroom norms

Read each objective aloud and explain why building community is important. Keep a friendly tone and point to the corresponding icons on the slide.

1. Name-Tag Creation

• Pick up a name-tag template
• Write your name and draw one favorite thing
• Be creative!

As students enter, hand out name-tag templates. Model your own on the board: write your name and draw your favorite thing. Encourage creativity and movement.

2. All About Me Puzzle

• Find classmates with adjoining pieces
• Form groups and assemble the puzzle
• Share one thing you drew

Distribute puzzle pieces so each student has one. Explain how to find matching pieces, assemble into small groups, and share one fact with the class.

3. Brainstorm Classroom Norms

What rules help us stay kind, safe, and ready to learn?
Share your ideas on sticky notes

Gather around the chart paper. Prompt students to suggest rules that keep everyone kind, safe, and ready to learn. Record suggestions, then guide the class to agree on 3–5 norms.

Closing & Team Cheer

• Share one thing you learned about a peer
• Cheer: “We are 2nd Grade Superstars!”

Invite each student to share one new thing they learned about a peer. Lead the class in the cheer, clapping hands or jumping if they like.

All About Me Poster Puzzle

Teacher Directions: Print one sheet per student. After students complete their pieces, cut along the outer border to create individual puzzle pieces. Students will work together to assemble all pieces into a class poster.
