Lesson Plan

Add to 10 Checklist

Students will be able to use counters and ten frames to solve addition problems within 10, write corresponding equations, and self-monitor their work using a checklist.

Understanding how to add to 10 is a foundational math skill. This lesson empowers students to take ownership of their learning by using a self-monitoring checklist, helping them develop independence and accuracy in mathematics.

Audience

Kindergarten

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Direct instruction, guided practice, and independent application with a self-monitoring tool.

Materials

Counters (10 per student), Ten Frames (1 per student), Add to 10 Practice Problems Worksheet, Self-Monitoring Checklist, and Slide Deck: Adding to 10

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review the Slide Deck: Adding to 10.
  • Print one copy of the Add to 10 Practice Problems Worksheet per student.
  • Print one copy of the Self-Monitoring Checklist per student.
  • Gather counters (10 per student) and ten frames (1 per student).

Step 1

Introduction & Warm-Up

5 minutes

  • Display the first slide of the Slide Deck: Adding to 10 with a fun math riddle or a quick mental math challenge about adding two small numbers.
  • Engage students by asking: "Who can remind us what addition means?" (Combining, putting together, finding the total).
  • Introduce the lesson objective: "Today, we're going to become Addition Detectives! We'll use our tools to solve addition puzzles to 10, write down our discoveries, and then check our super-sleuth work with a special checklist!"

Step 2

Modeling & Guided Practice

10 minutes

  • Advance to the next slides in the Slide Deck: Adding to 10 to review ten frames and counters.
  • Distribute ten frames and 10 counters to each student.
  • Model solving an addition problem to 10 (e.g., 4 + 3) using a ten frame and counters on the board or with a document camera. Say your thoughts aloud as you place counters.
  • Model writing the equation clearly on the board.
  • Introduce the Self-Monitoring Checklist. Go through each step of the checklist with the modeled problem: "Did I use my counters? Did I use my ten frame? Did I write the equation? Did I check my answer?" Emphasize what 'checking your answer' looks like (e.g., counting all the counters again).
  • Guide students through 1-2 practice problems together, having them use their counters and ten frames, write the equation on their Add to 10 Practice Problems Worksheet, and use their checklist to self-monitor. Provide immediate feedback.

Step 3

Independent Practice

10 minutes

  • Distribute the remaining Add to 10 Practice Problems Worksheet and instruct students to continue solving problems independently using their counters and ten frames.
  • Remind students to use their Self-Monitoring Checklist after each problem. Encourage them to genuinely check their work.
  • Circulate the classroom, providing support and observing students' use of the ten frame, counters, equation writing, and the checklist.

Step 4

Wrap-Up & Share

5 minutes

  • Bring the class back together. Ask a few students to share a problem they solved and how they used their Self-Monitoring Checklist to ensure their answer was correct.
  • Reinforce the importance of using tools and checking their work. "Great job being Addition Detectives today! Using our checklist helps us be super careful and make sure our math is always right!"

Slide Deck

Addition Detectives!

Our Mission Today:

  • Use our super tools (counters and ten frames) to solve addition puzzles.
  • Write down our discoveries as equations.
  • Check our work like real detectives with a special checklist!

Welcome students and start with a fun math riddle or a quick mental math challenge. Ask students to share what addition means in their own words.

Our Super Tools!

The Ten Frame

  • A special grid with 10 spaces.
  • Helps us organize our numbers.

Counters

  • Small objects to represent numbers.
  • We'll use them on our ten frame!

Review what a ten frame is and how counters are used to represent numbers. Emphasize that a ten frame helps us see numbers up to 10 clearly.

Let's Solve a Puzzle!

Problem: 4 + 3 = ?

  1. Place 4 counters on your ten frame.
  2. Add 3 more counters of a different color.
  3. Count how many total counters are on your ten frame.
  4. Write the equation: 4 + 3 = ____

Model a problem like 4 + 3. Place 4 counters, then 3 more. Count them all. Show how to write '4 + 3 = 7'. Introduce the self-monitoring checklist here and go through each step as you model.

Our Detective Checklist!

After each problem, ask yourself:

  • Did I use my counters? (Yes/No)
  • Did I use my ten frame? (Yes/No)
  • Did I write the equation? (Yes/No)
  • Did I check my answer by counting again? (Yes/No)

Display the self-monitoring checklist on this slide or a separate poster. Explicitly go through each question with the previous example (4+3=7).

Practice Together!

Try these with your tools:

  • 5 + 2 = ?
  • 6 + 4 = ?

Don't forget your Detective Checklist!

Guide students through 1-2 more practice problems (e.g., 5 + 2, 6 + 4) with their materials, encouraging them to use the checklist as they go. Provide feedback.

Your Mission, Detectives!

Independent Practice Time!

  • Use your counters and ten frame.
  • Solve the problems on your worksheet.
  • IMPORTANT: Use your Self-Monitoring Checklist for EACH problem!

Explain that students will now work on their own worksheet using the tools and checklist. Circulate and observe.

Mission Accomplished!

Sharing Our Discoveries

  • What was one problem you solved?
  • How did your Detective Checklist help you today?

Great job checking your work and being super mathematicians!

Bring students back together. Ask a few to share a problem and how the checklist helped them. Reinforce the value of self-monitoring.
