Lesson Plan

Activator Arsenal Lesson Plan

Students will learn and practice 10 short classroom activators, enabling them to re-engage attention and manage behavior quickly throughout the school day.

Providing students with quick, structured brain breaks fosters self-regulation, reduces disruptions, and cultivates a positive classroom climate, benefiting focus and learning.

Audience

10th Grade Students

Time

15 minutes

Approach

Introduce, model, and practice 10 activators in a rotated or whole-class format.

Materials

Classroom Activator Cards, Activator Reference Poster, Timer or Stopwatch, Speaker for Music Breaks, and Yoga Mats (optional)

Prep

Gather Materials

5 minutes

  • Review the 10 activators on the Classroom Activator Cards.
  • Print and cut out the cards as needed.
  • Hang the Activator Reference Poster where all students can see.
  • Check the Timer or Stopwatch and sync it with your class schedule.
  • Test the Speaker for Music Breaks and have a playlist ready.
  • Clear a small area for movement or optional yoga mats.

Step 1

Introduction

2 minutes

  • Greet students and explain that today they’ll learn quick “activators” to reset focus and energy.
  • Briefly define activators: short, structured brain breaks to improve behavior and attention.
  • Emphasize when and why to use them during the school day.

Step 2

Warm-up Activator Demo

3 minutes

  • Select one activator (e.g., “Shake It Out”).
  • Model the move for the class: shake arms and legs for 30 seconds.
  • Use the Timer or Stopwatch to time the 30 seconds.
  • Ask students how they feel afterward to highlight the benefit.

Step 3

Activator Practice

8 minutes

Option A: Station Rotation

  • Divide class into small groups at 5 stations, each with 2 activator cards.
  • Students spend 1 minute at each station practicing both activators (30s per activator).
  • Signal transitions with a chime on the Speaker for Music Breaks.

Option B: Whole-Class Sequential

  • Lead the entire class through all 10 activators in sequence:
    1. Mindful Minute Breathing
    2. Wall Push-Ups
    3. Chair Yoga Stretches
    4. Dance Freeze
    5. Brain Dance Arm Swings
    6. Silent Ball Pass
    7. Shake It Out
    8. Deep Breathing
    9. Stand & Snap
    10. Quick Trivia (verbal)
  • Spend ~45 seconds on each: 30s to perform, 15s to reset.
  • Monitor energy and adjust pacing as needed.

Step 4

Cool-down and Reflection

2 minutes

  • Guide students in 1 minute of deep breathing to return to class mode.
  • On a sticky note or in chat, have each student write their favorite activator and one way they’ll use it.
  • Collect responses as an exit ticket and remind students these tools are available any time.

10 Quick Brain Breaks for Focus & Engagement
Tier 1 | 10th Grade | 15 Minutes

Welcome students and introduce today’s session. Explain that they’ll learn quick ‘activators’ — short brain breaks to reset focus and energy throughout the day. Highlight session details: Tier 1, 10th grade, 15 minutes.

Today’s Objectives

• Learn 10 short classroom activators
• Practice each activator to build muscle memory
• Reflect on when and how to use them

Read each objective aloud and connect to classroom needs. Emphasize that students will not only learn but also practice and reflect on using these tools independently.

What Is an Activator?

Activators are brief, structured brain breaks that help you:
• Reset focus and energy
• Manage stress and behavior
• Re-engage quickly in learning

Define activators and explain their purpose. Remind students these are quick, structured moves or pauses designed to improve attention and behavior.

The 10 Activators

  1. Mindful Minute Breathing
  2. Wall Push-Ups
  3. Chair Yoga Stretches
  4. Dance Freeze
  5. Brain Dance Arm Swings
  6. Silent Ball Pass
  7. Shake It Out
  8. Deep Breathing
  9. Stand & Snap
  10. Quick Trivia (verbal)

Briefly run through the list so students know what’s coming. Point out the Activator Reference Poster and Classroom Activator Cards around the room.

Let’s Try One: Shake It Out

• Stand up and shake your arms and legs vigorously
• Continue for 30 seconds (use the timer)
• Notice how your body and mind feel afterward

Select ‘Shake It Out.’ Model the movement: shake arms and legs for 30 seconds. Use the Timer or Stopwatch. After, ask: “How do you feel now compared to before?”

Practice Your Activators

Option A: Station Rotation
• 5 stations, 2 cards each
• 1 minute per station (30s per activator)
• Chime signals when to rotate

Option B: Whole-Class Sequence
• Lead all 10 activators in order
• 30s perform + 15s reset each
• Monitor energy and adjust pace

Explain both practice options. For stations, assign groups and point to cards. For whole-class, explain pace: 30 seconds perform, 15 seconds reset. Use the Speaker for Music Breaks to signal transitions.

Cool-down & Reflection

• 1 Minute Deep Breathing to reset
• On a sticky note, write:
– Your favorite activator
– When you’ll use it next
• Submit as your exit ticket

Guide students through 1 minute of deep breathing. Then prompt them to write or share one favorite activator and one way they’ll use it in class. Collect these as exit tickets.

Keep Activating!

Use these activators throughout the day to stay focused and calm. Check the posters and cards whenever you need a quick reset!

Reinforce that these tools are theirs to use anytime. Encourage them to check the Activator Reference Poster or grab a card when they need a quick reset.
