In this lesson, students will explore the world of abstract expressionism by creating their unique art pieces. This activity encourages creativity and self-expression through various art mediums, helping students understand how colors, shapes, and forms can convey emotions and ideas.

Canvas or large paper, Acrylic paints, Brushes, Sponges, Palette knives, Water cups, Paper towels, Aprons or old shirts, and Discussion Questions

Step 1

Introduction to Abstract Expressionism

  • Welcome the students and briefly introduce Abstract Expressionism.
  • Explain key characteristics: emphasis on spontaneous, automatic creation, importance of color and form over representational accuracy.
  • Show examples of famous works by artists like Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning.

Step 2

Hands-On Art Creation

40 mins

  • Provide each student with a canvas or large sheet of paper and painting supplies.
  • Encourage them to experiment with different techniques (e.g., dripping, splattering, spreading paint with a palette knife).
  • Allow students to freely express their emotions and ideas through color and form.
  • Walk around to provide guidance and encouragement, ensuring a positive and supportive atmosphere.

Step 3

Art Reflection and Discussion

10 mins

  • Once the students have completed their artwork, gather everyone for a discussion.
  • Ask volunteers to share their pieces and talk about their creative process and the emotions they aimed to convey.
  • Use the discussion questions to guide a conversation about the experience and the artworks.
