Lesson Plan

ABC Super Sleuth

Students will be able to recognize all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet and associate each letter with its primary phonetic sound.

Mastering the ABCs is the cornerstone of literacy. This individualized lesson ensures each student gets the targeted practice they need to confidently approach reading and writing, building a strong foundation for future academic success.

Audience

Kindergarten

Time

15 minutes

Approach

Interactive, multisensory, personalized practice.

Materials

Whiteboard or large paper, Dry-erase markers or crayons, ABC Super Sleuth Slide Deck, Letter Sound Flashcards, and Letter Tracing Worksheet

Prep

Gather Materials & Review

5 minutes

  • Review the ABC Super Sleuth Lesson Plan and all linked materials.
    - Print and cut out the Letter Sound Flashcards.
    - Print the Letter Tracing Worksheet.
    - Ensure whiteboard/paper and markers/crayons are ready.

Step 1

Warm-Up: Letter Chant (2 minutes)

2 minutes

  • Begin with a quick alphabet chant, pointing to letters on the ABC Super Sleuth Slide Deck as you go. (Slide 1)
    - Ask the student: "What letter is this? What sound does it make?"

Step 2

Letter & Sound Match (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Use the Letter Sound Flashcards. Show a card and ask the student to identify the letter and its sound.
    - Focus on letters the student finds challenging. Say the letter and sound together.
    - Differentiation: If a student struggles, provide a verbal cue or an example word. If they are proficient, have them say a word that starts with that letter's sound.

Step 3

Tracing & Writing Fun (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Introduce the Letter Tracing Worksheet. (Slide 2)
    - Guide the student to trace uppercase and lowercase letters, emphasizing correct stroke order.
    - Encourage the student to say the letter and its sound as they trace and write.
    - Differentiation: For extra support, physically guide their hand. For advanced students, ask them to write a word starting with the letter.

Step 4

Cool-Down: Quick Check (3 minutes)

3 minutes

  • Show a few Letter Sound Flashcards randomly. Ask the student to identify the letter and its sound.
    - End with positive reinforcement: "You did a super job today, ABC Super Sleuth!"

Slide Deck

ABC Super Sleuth: Let's Learn Our Letters!

Ready to be an alphabet detective?

Let's chant our ABCs together!

Welcome the student and set a positive tone. Begin by pointing to the letters on the screen (or a physical alphabet chart) as you lead a quick, energetic alphabet chant. The goal is to activate prior knowledge and get them ready to learn.

Time to Trace!

Now that we've practiced our letters and sounds, let's practice writing them!

Get ready for your Letter Tracing Worksheet!

Transition to the tracing activity. Explain what they will be doing with the worksheet. Emphasize correct letter formation and saying the letter sound as they trace.
