Activity
Choice Spinner Wheel
Create a durable spinner wheel with six core action words to encourage spontaneous requests and turn-taking. Students spin the arrow, identify the action, then use their AAC device to say “I want to ___.”
Section | Icon | Action |
---|---|---|
1 | 🤸 | jump |
2 | 👏 | clap |
3 | 🌀 | spin |
4 | 🐰 | hop |
5 | 💃 | dance |
6 | 🎤 | sing |
Materials & Assembly:
- Print the spinner wheel on cardstock (circle approx. 12" diameter)
- Laminate both sides for durability
- Attach a plastic spinner arrow or a brad in the center so it spins freely
- Optionally mount on a foam board or large clipboard for stability
Instructions for Use (5 minutes):
- Place the spinner in the center of the group.
- Invite one student to spin the arrow.
- When it stops, ask the group: “What action did you get?”
- Model tapping “I want to ___” plus the action on your AAC device.
- Prompt the spinner to find and select “I want to [action]” on their device and say it aloud.
- Celebrate with a quick demonstration of the action and a group cheer.
- Pass the spinner to the next student until time is up.
Tips:
- Start with slower spins to ensure students have processing time.
- If a student needs support, offer a choice board of two actions to narrow their options.
- Rotate in new actions periodically (e.g., “run,” “read,” “throw”) to expand vocabulary.
