Activity

Self-Regulation Activity

In this engaging, role-playing activity, students will work in small groups to practice self-regulation strategies. The activity is designed to help students apply the techniques they've learned in real-life scenarios in a fun, supportive setting.

Activity Setup

  1. Divide into Groups:

    • Create small groups of 3-4 students.
    • Explain that each group will act out a short scenario that involves a situation where things don't go as planned.
  2. Scenario Cards:

    • Prepare simple scenario cards ahead of time (e.g., "You were playing a game and someone took your toy," "It started raining during recess plans," "You didn't get the turn you wanted")
    • Provide one card to each group.
  3. Roles:

    • Each group assigns roles (e.g., the person experiencing frustration and one or two classmates who help apply calming techniques).
    • Encourage roles to be rotated so that every student gets a chance to practice different aspects of the scenario.

How to Play

  1. Read and Plan:

    • Each group reads their scenario card.
    • Pause and discuss within the group what feelings might come up and which self-regulation strategies (deep breathing, counting slowly, positive self-talk) could be used to handle the situation.
  2. Role Play:

    • Groups act out the scenario, focusing on demonstrating the chosen strategies to manage emotions. Encourage the use of clear expressions and simple words to help everyone follow along, including students working toward IEP reading goals.

  3. Group Reflection:

    • After each role play, ask each group to share what strategy they used and why it helped manage the situation.

Discussion & Follow-Up Questions

  • What did you feel during the role-play?

  • Which self-regulation strategy did you find most helpful, and why?

  • How might you use these strategies in other situations outside the classroom?

Teacher Tips

  • Walk around during the activity, offering gentle reminders and praise for students who effectively use self-regulation techniques.
  • Adapt scenarios by simplifying language or using visual aids as necessary, particularly for students with IEP reading goals.
  • Ensure all students are included in the discussion and feel comfortable sharing their ideas.

By the end of this activity, students will practice using self-regulation strategies in a variety of scenarios, reinforcing their ability to manage emotions when things don't go their way in a practical, engaging manner.

Cool Down

Calm Down Techniques

This cool down activity is designed to help students relax and reflect on the self-regulation strategies they've learned. It provides a structured, calm space to practice deep breaths and mindfulness, allowing them to internalize the lesson content.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Deep Breathing Exercise

    • Ask students to sit comfortably with their feet flat on the floor and hands resting on their laps.
    • Instruct them to close their eyes or lower their gaze.
    • Guide them through 3 deep breaths: Inhale slowly through the nose, hold the breath for 2 seconds, and exhale slowly through the mouth.

  2. Visualization

    • Encourage students to imagine a peaceful place, such as a quiet beach, a calm park, or anywhere they feel safe and happy.
    • Ask them to visualize the sights, sounds, and smells of that peaceful place.

  3. Gentle Stretching

    • Lead the students in a simple stretching exercise, such as slowly raising their arms up and then lowering them.
    • This can help release any tension in the body.

  4. Reflective Discussion

    • Once the exercises are complete, open a space for students to share how they feel.
    • Ask reflective questions like: "What part of the exercise helped you the most?" or "How can you use these techniques when you feel upset?"

Tips for Teachers

  • Keep it calm: Use a soft voice and slow pacing to maintain a peaceful environment.
  • Be patient: Give students a few moments to fully engage with the exercise.
  • Validate feelings: Acknowledge that it’s okay to feel different emotions both during and after the exercise.
  • Adjust language: Simplify instructions if necessary, especially for students with IEP reading goals, using clear and concise language.

By regularly practicing these techniques, students can build better self-regulation habits and feel more confident managing their emotions when faced with challenges.

Activity

Emotion Charades

In this fun and engaging activity, students will play charades to practice recognizing and expressing different emotions. This activity is ideal for kindergarten-level students as it uses simple actions and clear visuals to help children understand feelings.

How to Play:

  1. Preparation:

    • Write down simple emotions (happy, sad, angry, surprised) on separate cards.
    • If possible, include pictures to help even non-readers.
    • Explain the rules of charades in clear, simple language using text-to-speech (TTS) support if needed.

  2. Game Instructions:

    • Divide the class into small groups or have them take turns individually.
    • One student picks an emotion card and acts out the emotion without speaking.
    • The rest of the students guess the emotion. Use multiple-choice options if needed (e.g., teacher prompts: "Is it happy, sad, angry, or surprised?").

  3. Acting Out:

    • Encourage students to exaggerate facial expressions and body language to clearly communicate the emotion.
    • Teachers should circulate, offering support and reinforcing the use of simple language and actions.

  4. Reflection:

    • After each round, ask the students how they felt while acting out or guessing the emotion. (Teacher may provide multiple-choice questions for a structured response.)
    • Use TTS to read out a reflection question such as, "Which emotion did you act out? How did it make you feel?" followed by structured options if needed.

Teacher Tips:

  • Use Visual Aids: Incorporate images on the emotion cards to support understanding, especially for students with reading challenges.
  • Keep Language Simple: Ensure that instructions and reflection questions use simple words and clear examples.
  • TTS Support: Activate text-to-speech for all key instructions and reflection questions so every student can hear them clearly.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Offer praise and gentle corrections to encourage participation and reinforcement of the learning objectives.

By playing Emotion Charades, students will build their vocabulary on feelings, enhance their ability to express themselves nonverbally, and practice identifying emotions in a fun, interactive way.

Activity

Calm Down Relay

In this active and fun relay race, students will practice calming techniques while engaging in a team-based challenge. This activity reinforces self-regulation strategies in a playful setting, making it perfect for young learners.

How to Play:

  1. Preparation:

    • Set up a simple relay course using cones or markers. The course should be short and safe.
    • Prepare instruction cards that list calming techniques (e.g., deep breaths, slow counting, gentle stretching).
    • Explain the rules clearly, using simple language and TTS support if needed.

  2. Divide into Teams:

    • Split students into small teams (3-4 members per team).
    • Each team lines up at the start of the course.

  3. Relay Race:

    • The first student in each team takes an instruction card. The card will prompt them to perform a calming technique (e.g., take 3 deep breaths, count to 10 slowly, or do a slow arm stretch).
    • Once the student completes the task, they run to a designated marker and back, then pass the card and the baton (or a simple object) to the next team member.
    • Encourage all students to perform the assigned technique calmly even while participating in a race.

  4. Finish & Reflection:

    • After the relay, gather all students and discuss how performing calming techniques made them feel.
    • Use TTS to ask a reflection question, such as, "Which calming move did you like best?" and offer multiple-choice answers if needed.

Teacher Tips:

  • Keep it Simple: Use clear, concise instructions and visual prompts to help young learners understand each step.
  • Encourage Calmness: Remind students that the focus is on using the calming techniques correctly, not on speed.
  • TTS Support: Utilize text-to-speech to ensure every student hears the instructions clearly.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Praise students for demonstrating calm behavior, reinforcing the learning objectives.

By participating in the Calm Down Relay, students will have the opportunity to practice self-regulation techniques in a lively, team-based environment that promotes both physical activity and emotional control.
