“Being recognized for my work as a Summer Camp Professional in mental health leadership means that the care and dedication I’ve put into supporting campers and staff have truly made an impact. It affirms the importance of creating safe, compassionate spaces where everyone feels seen and supported. This recognition motivates me to continue advocating for mental wellness and to keep growing as a leader in this vital area.”

Stephan Lockney is the Associate Executive of Camping Services at MetroWest YMCA, where he oversees four diverse summer camp programs serving youth across the region. He leads year-round planning, staff hiring, and professional development for over 350 seasonal employees—with a focus on inclusion, safety, and mental health. Under his leadership, MetroWest embedded mental health training into staff onboarding, implemented the national CampWell framework, and built onsite support systems including social work partnerships and peer de-escalation structures. His work fosters not only positive camper experiences, but also a sustainable, well-supported culture for staff—because, as he puts it, “you need to be your best you.”
