“What does being recognized for your work in mental health leadership mean to you or your community?: As cliche as it sounds, it means the world, not because of me in particular, but because of the importance and priority mental health deserves, and needs, to have. For my current and previous communities, any recognition I receive is a product of the work we’ve done together. I truly love the work I do, and being recognized for doing what I love is pretty special, as are the students and families I’ve been able to work with and support.”
Aisha Squalli is a school counselor at Fort River Elementary, where she leads Tier 1–3 supports and centers her work on building deep, trust-based relationships with students and families. She’s known for proactive, two-way family engagement — including positive phone calls home, open communication channels, and visible presence at school events — especially with caregivers who have felt disconnected from schools in the past. Aisha also facilitates restorative conversations between students and staff, helping to de-escalate conflict and foster long-term trust. Her leadership reflects a student- and family-centered approach grounded in transparency, advocacy, and authentic care.
