“Being recognized for my work in mental health leadership is both an honor and a powerful reminder of the importance of advocating for emotional well-being in our communities. This recognition highlights the value of creating safe, supportive environments where students and staff can thrive mentally and emotionally. For my school, it reinforces our commitment to prioritizing mental health, inspiring continued growth, awareness, and leadership in this essential area.”
Aatiqah Ali is the Student Services Coordinator at Excel Middle Years Academy, an alternative setting for students exiting disciplinary placements, where she leads daily SEL programming and full-scope student support. She’s built identity-affirming clubs and creative outlets—like entrepreneurship and fashion groups—that double as therapeutic spaces and foster leadership, confidence, and real-world skill development. Aatiqah also runs schoolwide systems like daily SEL blocks and Harambe, a student-led morning meeting that centers reflection and community. Her work exemplifies whole-child, relational SEL in a high-need setting, blending structure and creativity to meet students where they are.
